Has anyone ever considered using Cabot's (or any other brand) Deck Stain - to "paint" a plank deck? The cockpit in my lobsterboat is cedar planked, painted grey. I have sanded it and reefed out the seams. I'm about to fill the seams with SikaFlex and then paint. My latest issue of Consumers Report has a story about exposure testing deck stains and solid color Cabots showed no wear or fading after 5 years. At 25 bucks a gallon, it is alot cheaper than a marine paint of any kind.

Check out a product called Penofin. Brazilian rosewood oil. Somewhere around 30.00/gal. I use it on some teak as an oil. It has UV filters also. A friend of mine does all of his teak with it. I've used it on exterior decks, works very well and is a breeze to maintain. I bought it at Douglass Lumber. Penofin has a web site also. penofin.com , I believe.

I don't know about using Cabot's on a deck, but I
have had Cabot's Bleaching stain on my house for
15 years and it has held up very well. I have
reapplied it once. The shingles are white cedar, and I live on direct waterfront in Conn.
I know that the house takes a beating with the weather, salt spray and sun. It gives the house a nice grey, Cape Cod type finish. I am very pleased with it.
The formula was changed a few years ago to comply with environmental laws, but I would say it has continued to perform as well as the old formula.
It would be interesting to try it on a deck.
