Six students, teacher drowned in NZ river

"The devastated principal of an east Auckland Christian college says the school lost seven very fine young people killed in the Tongariro National Park river tragedy.
Six students and one teacher died when they were caught in a swollen river on Tuesday at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre based in Tongariro. Their names had yet to be released."

Very hard for the parents and friends, especially those who survived.

It is going to be very very hard on the organisers (whoever they are)
as there were heavy rain fall warnings and river warnings in the area at the time.

Very sad......rivers kill quite a few here in NZ.
We don't know how lucky we are....

      So sad.

Grieving love unsaid. | Tomorrow will fail someday. | Tell them today, OK?

The words I want to say would get me scotted.
I just can't believe they did this.

I couldn't agree with you more....there were plenty of heavy rain warnings put out so WHAT WERE THEY DOING out there?
I once thought I was wrong, but I was wrong, I wasn't wrong.

            Really sad and irresponsible!
It seems that once people have a schedule in their minds they are reluctant to amend it to allow for changing conditions.
For years I've been watching people in Dallas by the dozens drive into flooded creeks trying to get home from work on time despite a 6 inch rain. Bless their hearts!

Phenomenaly sad . Pretty much saturation coverage here ,and I must admit that my earlier stance is moderating.

I have spent a lot of time around those areas either skiing at Mt Ruapehu or fly fishing the Tongariro river and Lake Taupo so know these areas well. The vertical fall versus lateral run ratio is such that even a light rain in the ranges causes those rivers to rise dramatically very quickly. Those Experts should have known this and planned better.
You don't fly a light plane, set sail on your yacht or fish and float through a river canyon without a good look at the upcoming weather forecast!!!
