Anyone know of a source for fiberglass rods for a tent cover. I was wanting to build a cover similar to the one shown in WB #174 Oct 2003 on the boat "Jenny" by Robert Osleeb

Well - You could slice them out of an otherwise useless old feeberglass boat. Sort of a strip de-construction.

I haven't read the article you mentioned, but you might try a local agricultural supply store or a co-op in your area. I am guessing what you are looking for is the same product used for livestock fencing. Just a word of caution, be sure to wear good gloves, as the stuff is highly unpleasant to work with (or climb over), and it leaves nasty little fiberglass splinters. good luck.
Sincerely,
Josh

I didn't read the article, but wouldn't PVC pipe and fittings to connect it all together in a diameter that is flexible yet large enough to be sturdy be a good choice?

Any sailmaker or canvas shop that buys supplies from Bainbridge International or Challenge Sailcloth (most do) can get a variety of round fiberglass batten stock ranging from 1/4" diameter up to 3/4" - some solid, some tubular. The stuff is sold in 20'-24' lengths, but the suppliers will usually cut it into 8' chunks for UPS shipping if needed and some is flexible enough to coil.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I found what I needed at McMaster Carr. (I did not have to resort to sawing up a fiberglass boat, very creative idea though!)

Hey Todd, that was a great book you did. I was able to put together a sailing canoe this past spring and summer and have been having a great time with it. I've been using it in Florida at a no-motor zone on the Banana River. I am in the process of partially decking it for winter.
