I recall that WB mentioned that they would be coming out with digital issues. There was some discussion of this a while back in the Forum, and I am wondering if there is any update on the status of this?

I missed out on the CD and would love to see the digital issues even if they are on a subscription basis. The format of the ones that are available on the WB website are great, and it would be wonderful to be able to access all of the issues.

Does anyone have any info about this?

Only those 8 issues so far as I know.

Anything more in the works?

Yes. We plan to have all the back issues available as digital semi-instant downloads. But we'll hedge on the ETA.

Thank you, Scot.

The digital editions are in a good format.

Ah, yea, the digital format is pretty much the only hope for those who haven't got a complete set in the original hard-copy (paper, for those of you too young to remember that stuff). There's no two ways about it. The hard-copy format is to be preferred. You can't leave a digital copy laying on the back of the toilet tank to peruse when your mind is unoccupied with less important things!

Bob,

What? You don't have a wireless router and laptop?

Very briefly, why did the CD version go away?

Copyright infringement. For example, the other day Russ Manheimer asked Carl Cramer, publisher of WB Magazine to post a PDF of an article from the magazine about his own boat written by another author. His response:

Sorry, Russ. I don't have a PDF of the article (that would be a copyright infringement).

Maybe it's my upbringing, but to me paper copy is king.
I've lost too many writen bits to tech changes to have any faith in being able to read a CD in the future. Anybody remember 5" floppy disks or 8-Track tapes?
We can read Myan and Egyptian heiroglyphs many thousands of years old.
Care to guess at what the half life of a CD is?

I don't understand this copyright thing. WB mag is just reissuing it's own content in a different format. They already offer WB online, right? Now if Cruising World mag started issuing WB back issues on CD, I can see where there'd be a problem... I don't get it.

Re: CD. Remember the recent writer's strike? I think (guessing now) it's similar issue. This was all hashed out in an old thread long ago.

In 1992 I bought an aviation related business. We were given 8" floppy disks along with the floppy drives that contained copies of our client's manuals. Thankfully I did not have to retrieve manuals saved on those disks.

I have seen DVD for sale with a 100 year guarantee suitable for storing photos. Are there going to be any DVD drives in use in 100 years time?

What is the life expectancy of your DVD-R media?
When properly stored and handled, KODAK DVD-R media has a life expectancy of 100 years.

a cd lasts my grandcritters two weeks....I never give them the original..I give them a copy and store the original.

My attic floor joists are starting to sag under the weight of back issues. I'd sure consider a DVD/CD version for achiving.

RE: DVDs in the future. Nice thing about digital is that files can be copied without loss of quality/information. In priciple, you should be able to copy from your DVD to the next generation format as that comes along. Will require some discipline - until recently I still had some 3.5" floppies around.. I just chucked 'em; never did transfer them.

Half life for cd's themselves is less of a problem than the gizmo that reads it. I've NO faith that they'll be readable in any likely future. And this is a faith question. (No this isn't a rapture notion either)

It's not WB's content but the author/photographer's. They sold WB the rights to publish in their magazine. I suspect new articles are sold with digital rights included in the contract.

Someone might have mentioned this in another thread somewhere, but issues 1-30 are now available on the WB site.
