Hello all
I'm looking to replace a few of the rings(?) that the dorades screw down into. The rings are installed on wooden boxes. I've been searching the web but havn't found a source. Anyone know a good source for these things. Thanks FM

Hey
Ok let me put that better.
I'm looking for a source for DECK PLATES that the COWLS screw into. I've come across a few but I'm wondering how I will know if the plates are tapped for the cowls I have.(Don't know the maker)
Any thoughts would be great, FM

The Dorade vent, named for the yawl where - I think this was Olin's bright idea - first installed is a normal funnel vent atop one end of a box. The through deck hole is at the other end of the box. Between them a seperator rises up from the deck creating a baffel so any water coming in the funnel can run out holes at the bottom of the sides of the funnel end of the box. Alternativly (more expensivly) a rim might rise up around the through deck fitting, making the baffel more local. The ultimate would be that round baffel capped by a screw-down mushroom so you can close it off in real cold or very sever storms. If you've a mushroom, the box can be square rather than rectangular as the mushroom cap prevents water intrusion. There's a vent make with a spring loaded mushroom as well.
Anyway, I take it that you're addressing the threaded collar into which the funnel fits. In general you'll want three parts - the funnel, a plate for when the funnel's not in use, and the ring into which funnel and plate fit.
There are two major styles of ring. There's flat threaded rings, which may leak a bit but that does not matter in a Dorade. What does matter is that this model does not allow you to fix the orientation of the funnel. In this model the funnel is male threaded and the ring female.
The more common ring fitting sticks up male threaded and the funnel fits over it female threaded. These funnels usually have a couple of screws diametrically opposed so's you can tighten them to keep the funnel oriented, usually into the wind for vents aft in the cabin and away from the wind in the forepart of the cabin. This enhances the natural air-flow from aft at the companion forward.
So, your first step is to figure what you have and can you match it. Get the diameter and thread pitch before you get on the phone.
For suppliers - this was what you thought your question was about - look through our host's magazine - Bristol Bronze, Newfound Metals, R&W spring right to might but I'll bet Hamilton, Jamestown, etc could have some parts as well.

All of our vents, deck plates, etc. came from ABI. I think they have them in brass and SS. They have 3 in, 4 in and 5 inch sizes.

I've had trouble with this. Maybe you could get a vendor to measure the diameter and threads-per-inch precisely, but you might have to use trial and error. The consignment shops are a good bet.
Where are you located?

Sounds like a Nicro metal marine hardware part......made in plastic or bronze, with or without chrome plating.......I removed the cowl vents on my boat and replaced them with the solar powered ones set permanently on exhaust.....

A picture or good description might help. Is this a dorade, as in the box and funnel above or straight funnel through deck or what.

A few less obvious possibilities:
There is/was a marine consignment shop in Mystic, just above the bridge
Try Marine Consignment of Wickford (http://www.marineconsignment.com/) and
Historical Arts & Casting (http://www.historicalarts.com/) has gotten the patterns for the old Rostand line.

Thanks for the input guys.
This is a full dorade system with teak boxes with a 3 3/8" hole in the top to accept the deckplate which the cowl than screws into. FM

If the funnel part is male threaded, you might get away with an easy fix if you can't find the right threaded ring/insert.
If the hole's tight enough you can do some threading in the wood and harden it up with epoxy. But even with a little slack, drill and tap two thumb screws diametrically opposed from the inside base of the funnel and located such that you can get at each putting your hand in from outside. This will hold the funnel down and in whatever orientation you need.
But better if you can find the parts.

Here's the only place I've come up with so.

I'm waiting to hear back on the thread size. Thanks for the help and any other sources are still appreciated.
