When we did the deck on my boat we used dynel and didn't fill the weave so that the cloth would give us a non-skid surface.

This didn't work out so well. It actually is not a very good non-skid surface and doesn't hold paint at the top of the weave. So no I what I would like to do is fill the weave with epoxy and then repaint with a non-skid additive.

My question is what about the paint that is inside the weave at this time. If I sand it down, I will get rid of a lot of the thickness of the dynel. If I don't, the epoxy will be adhering to paint. Any thoughts?

peb...I can't help on this...I hemmed and haw'd about putting canvas back on my cabin top or using dynel...Went with the dynel and it is great...a nice rough surface and certainly very close in texture to canvas...Don't know why mine worked out and yours didn't
Good luck.

I am not professing to be an expert; but my two cents worth is that the next layer of dynel will not adhere well over paint. I'd say it has to be sanded down until all the paint is removed and the surface should be roughed up before laying down the second coat. Rather than sanding, you could try to remove the paint with acetone and a sturdy wire brush (protecting yourself from the acetone).
