J & E Riggin was cast loose from her dockside mooring by some young vandals a few months ago, resulting in substantial damage. Here's an eight minute video of repair progress narrated by her skipper.

(I've forwarded the link to Woodenboat Videos to see if they have interest in posting it.)

Why does Mariah Carey come up in "related videos" (not that I mind).

I would not have replaced the steel pins with trunnels.

Ha!

M. Carey- I was wondering if anyone would notice that. I have no clue what the commonality is, unless it's that both have had work done on their 'bow'?

Why not use trunnels? (I'm not disagreeing, don't know enough about the issue to disagree)

Seems that if the steel had lasted 80 years, then it had worked O.K.
I'd be worried about the strength of the trunnels, in this instance, I have no objection to them and in fact like them in principle. They are replacing steel with wood of the same cross section; that my not very eloquent worry.

You could see the iron pin he held up was "waisted" in the middle. It lasted 80 years but the skipper apparently thinks treenails will last longer. He is giving up some strength compared to new steel or iron, as you note.

Thanks.
He mentioned iron sickness, but only talked about the deterioration of the steel pins. I wonder how punky the wood is around the old steel fasteners. My understanding is that the real damage in iron sickness it the deterioration of the surrounding wood.

One of the "tags" (search terms) used on the video was "care" (as in boat care), so, I would assume it matches with Carey on some level.

Maybe she was also vandalized?

Right. Both have been stalked by teenagers.

Gareth, one consideration for this choice of fastener on an iron sick vessel with these scantlings would be the size of hole needed to remove the delignified wood around the old fastener holes.

The usual fix for this is to drill large, plug, and redrill for new drifts.

In a boat this size, you get to use 1" or better trunnels, eliminating several steps and the glue.

Those Locust trunnels will be around long after the frames and planking has turned to dust.

Isn't all of the framing, planking and stem new in this case?

Framing too? I missed that.

Carl Cramer at WB asked to have the Youtube "uploaded in segments of three minutes". Does anyone know how to do that? I don't.

Diolch yn fawr Hugh fyng ngwas. It makes sense. I don't think they replaced all or even most of the frames.
