I feel guilty. Its basically undisturbed as it was in 1975 ,except I caved in.( not the furler.. that was put on by the previous owner.)
pic taken a year ago.

I suspect its something to do with a gun carriage on the foredeck, but we really need bigger pics.

Oh yeah.. well there was that but I feel no guilt about it.....
well, except when Lion NZ was only a boat length away when I fired it, and they all jumped forward about 10 ft, except the helmsman who couldn't because of the wheel.( Sorry about the spoke pattern buddy)

Some sort of brown structure at the forward port side of the coach roof...a solar water heater? A deck box?

Please tell me that there isn't an A/C unit forward of the mast.

No, thats one of the kids dinghies Robbie's talking about.
Aircon forward of the mast? That might be a kid ( actual) I think.( edit.. or its the forehatch folded onto a fender right by the mast)
This is fun ain't it, its like a quiz.

Not sure but I'll wager the bimini.

Nope. Its just a bit dirty in the first pic.
I'm beginning to feel encouraged if it isn't too obvious. I can't see anything else unfortunately.

yeahhhhh.:D
Its really for the sun ,which down here is like acid. That sunscreen thread reminded me.

The frames came with the boat only they were set up in a sort of pagoda shape... weird. I bought some adjustable fittings and put a hard lid on it as a bit of an experiment.
The big negative I was worried about was the loss of the mizzen vang , but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem so far.

Is that a radar "dome" at the port stern? I see something round or oval there a little above the rail. Seems a bit low for radar, though.

Just shoot at a lower resolution and anchor at the far end of the anchorage and no one will ever know :)

Similar. It frys things . In fact it burns things to a crisp when they get too close.
BBQ.
might be something wrong with the user interface I think.
are you getting shorter JB or is the kid about to overtake?? :D

Not the barbie, what I was seeing was just below the level of the boom. I think it might be the bimini hard-top itself with something else thrown in, maybe just someone's swimsuit drying and flying in the breeze.
The Y-shaped frame is obvious now that we know what to look for. The shot from the cockpit indicates you've done a great job with the design and installation.

Who made the hardtop?
John B
02-27-2008, 01:59 PM
I made it Paul. As I said its a bit of an experiment so I made it out of plastic sign board.Extremely light sort of expanded acrylic stuff. Reasoning being that if if works out, I could make a ply/glass one later.
I still have angst about it but we just get burnt to crisp if you make a mistake, and we spend a great deal of time on the water here. Several people I know have had the melanoma shocks lately( benign fortunately).
I dunno. Things are different from the coppertone tan days and I feel that its the responsible thing to do if only for the kids.
And I think the boat can stand it.

Captain Alice! I'll be redundant soon.
and yes and yes.
That was just after we idled up to the anchor at Whangaroa, broke it out( in amongst moored and anchored boats),selected forward and broke the throttle cable.
So Al held the boat bang on wind on the nose so she didn't sheer off while I was down below ripping off engine covers to get some throttle / steerage way on it. Rigged up a string to get us into the bay we were going to.

As most of you know John is a regular Mr Fixit guy. McGyver had nothing on John.
I won't be surprised if we see the next shot of Riada sporting some cannon ports. Maybe even a wide white line running along the topsides with several cannon ports.
I can see it now... down below decks, everything stripped out, Kirsty and Alice on 2 and 6 stations each side of the cannon, Tom sporting a bandana and knife clenched hard in his teeth, fuse in one hand and cannon ball in the other, Zoe running back and forth with cartaridges and John...
frothing at the moth, crazed bloodshot eyes and any unsuspecting person in a dinghy in his sights... God help us

You know Easter is just around the corner don't you Stevey boy.
We could go for a repeat of the
and any unsuspecting person in a dinghy in his sights... God help us.
That was soooo good last time.

Looks well made and very practical. Much better than other designs (abortions) you commonly see. Hardly noticeable.

Thanks Dave.
There's a tea/ mushroom canvas colour that tends to 'disappear 'on the boat and I'm thinking if the outside dropped edges were painted that, it would help.
Its the colour on the cover over the main hatch (under the end of the main boom).

sort of matches with the teak .

That signboard is a good idea, I wonder how long it lasts?
I'm thinking of making a hardtop in place of my fabric dodger, room for thought.
Neat the way it curves on the edges.Did you use wiring ties for that?

Sounds good to me, fwiw.
Jeez, that's a nice looking boat, and with a powerful rig too. You must have such a good time with your family aboard her.

Its called signex Paul. 6mm thick and I heat formed it with a heat gun. A hot wire like the shopfitters use would be better.
last ? Don't know but it is an outdoor product and if it breaks down too early I'll go to plan B and cold mould or kerf some ply or use bending ply etc etc.
Its really doing the job Dave but while you couldn't call it tender its quite reactive. If you have the wrong amount of sail on she'll tell you pretty quickly. Reef the mizzen at 20 and claw it down at 25, she'll go well with full main and #3 jib on the wind through 30 if you need to.
It might either be fairly light or have a high Sail/Displ. ratio. Between 10 and 10.5 tons I think. ( 9.8 T design weight)
This first full season in her has been a joy.I haven't sailed her for a month and I'm missing it.

"Reef the mizzen at 20..."
LOL. I can't recall the last time I went sailing when it blew that hard. It just doesn't happen that often around here.

Really ?
seems to blow nothing but since christmas. or 30.
One guy reckoned he had 50 knot gusts on his wind gear that first day of our regatta 2 weeks ago. I've been saying 35 cos it sounds like a lot . 50? surely not.
The hairy sail we had on New years day in 3 to 4 metre close seas I thought was about 25 to 30 but apparently ( on speaking to a few people out that day)it was quite a bit more. That was a classic mistake. I double reefed and unfurled about 1/2 the #3 but we were getting underpowered in the troughs. I'm sure in retrospect that if I'd gone 1 reef and some more headsail , the motion would have been a lot better. Perhaps the crew wouldn't have fed the fishes.:D
ah well, learning curve and all that.
On the positive side, even though we were being chucked around like an opti in a ferry wake, the new autohelm could handle it!! I tried it a couple of times to see what it would do... its big problem was that it was too rigid at holding course and I needed to sail her around the waves. Still , It was muscular enough to do it while I trimmed something.
