... And he was a very interesting guy. I think if he had been born 20 years later, he would be posting on this forum. His work let me enjoy days like this:

I kept meaning to send him some pictures with my kids enjoying the boat, but never got around to it. I am going to fix that mistake by making sure I send them to his wife.

His obituary is here (http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/search.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-02-23-0100.html). From the article:

"Afterward, they moved to the Northern Neck [of Virginia]. A man who had built or rebuilt sailboats ranging from dinghies to ocean-racing yachts, Mr. Carl completed his last sailboat built from scratch, an 18-foot catboat, when he was 86."

I posted this (http://www.woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin/upload/showpost.php?p=1610381&postcount=57), after meeting him when I bought the boat, which is the catboat referred to in the obituary (although it is only 18ft if the rudder is kicked up and you count the bowsprit):

The sail is not flaked cleanly because in this picture I am getting ready to haul out for the winter.

The obituary mentions that he is the designer of the P-82, which was two P-51 bolted together. He mentioned that when I met him, and showed me these two pictures on his shop wall:

He and his wife fed me pound cake and coffee, and told stories about sailing across the Atlantic. I should have stayed longer. He was an incredible person.

Thanks for sharing Marsh. What a life. And his test pilot wife, too, I'd like to hear more of her story. The first woman to fly a jet aircraft.

A rare thing to meet a person like this and actually own a boat he built.
