When visiting the UK, my FIL often takes me down to the "Allotment" - a sort of community garden area. Even in the off-season (We're talking from December and into the start of gardening season in their area, March) There are guys who are down in their garden sheds. They might be reading, having a cuppa, working on tools, chatting with one another - whatever.

Most appear to be retired (perhaps it is just the time of day that I'm there..) and will claim to be down escaping SWMBO for a while.

One fellow had a shed that was much larger than the others - about 15x20 - 1/2 of the actual allotment! It looked awful on the outside. weather worn, etc. However, there were several solar panels on the roof. Inside, it was nicely paneled, with some cabinets, a bookshelf and a closet. There was a woodstove, a television, a stereo, a small bar cabinet, several comfortable recliners and a carpet. Quite the retreat!

I'd pack it with cigars, rum and friends. And love it.

Hey, I have a boat, but I don't keep it at home. Nice to walk out back and have a smoke and a two fingers. The only downside I can see is that it would increase my consumption of these luxuries.

Waiting for my neighbors to sell me some land to build a boathouse with a loft workshop and ways and a dock, etc. Can't build now due to lot coverage limits, darn it!

But there's a guy down the street who has one already that hasn't been used in fifty years. Hmmmm.

Did you read the article? I thought the way he went about disguising his true purpose from his wife when building the shed was something you (or any woman) would be more upset about. Didn't that strike anyone as odd, especially the spending of $20K in a more or less concealed manner?

I've got a married friend who unilaterally bought an expensive cruising boat without discussing the impact on their lives of such a major financial commitment. It's been an unresolved source of conflict in their marriage ever since.
