Hey it's been a while since I've been on but I'm thinking of building one as a first project. Has anyone done one ? I picked up a plastic 16' in the fall but I saw one(LYS) in the Small Boat edition that WB puts out. Boy did it look nice beached with some rods sticking up. So I now want to build one and ditch the plastic. I long for shiny mirror like finishes. I'm going to build the 20' one.

There's a recent addition to the MyWoodenboat gallery of someone who built one. Are you aware of the blog for LYS builders here: http://gettingstartedinboats.typepad.com/getting_started_in_boats/

RB, I believe he is talking about the LYS powerboat, not the lumberyard skiff in GSIB.
Swede, google up information on a boat called the Brockway Skiff. This is what the LYS is modeled after. Extensive workboat history, and a very good inshore work vehicle.
Also, this isnt the LYS, but its a very close cousin, and has much to lend to building the LYS.

Yes the power boat version. Looks like a good shallow water striper boat. Nothing better than a big cow on the fly rod in a hand built boat.

Swede-highly recommend building this boat. Especially if you like stripers in tight water in a handcrafted skiff. It is a very straightforward build and Walter's plans from his site are generally easy to follow. I did the 16 footer and posted about fifty photos of the build process that can be found if you search the posts on here, or I'll go find the address for it again. Hardest part is getting the chine right on, otherwise all the other moves are pretty easy. I made a number of modifications to his plans to make it cheaper and easier such as using a meranti mahogany 1x4 gunwale, etc. I want to build another already. It's caught a lot of nice stripers as well. Brought three 45 inch plus fish in this past October on plugs one evening. That has never happened before for me so I credit the boat.
