Can anyone suggest a website containing succinct descriptions of woods used in maritime applications? I am particularly interested in woods used in building large 19th-century square-riggers, and I would like details: country of origin, history of use, specific density, rot resistance, specification application and why (tamarack for knees), etc.

Here's a great place to start. Specs on many species, foreign and domestic.

Here's another.

This might be the same info, different format:

Most boat building books have a chapter dedicated to wood for boats. Keep in mind times have changed and finding quality old growth wood is much harder.
