Gsus wept!

Now Mark, do you think that with how many millions of people living JUST like that in the World the great middle classes and ruling elites in the Western World would rouse themselves out of their slumber and take notice, when the only thing that seems to get their goat and attract their attention is me asking just a few of them not to shove girly pics in my face.

Unfortunately I don't think so! They would just prefer to shut their eyes, sit back... and continue to consume... And then it'll be too bloody late!!

Tylerdurden
01-26-2008, 05:30 PM
You would see this in the territories like Puerto Rico back in the 70's but not on this scale in the continental US. This is just one of many growing across the US.
Things are not as they seem.

Duncan Gibbs
01-26-2008, 06:18 PM
And just how much are candidates spending on the primaries alone? Maybe they should ALL spend a bit more on things that actually matter!!

What with all that cash tied up in Iraq and elsewhere, and huge budget and current account deficits, New Orleans still a mess, the highest prison population in the world, etc, etc, etc... You guys really need to start sorting some stuff out. :(

"Them" perhaps we mite look at the individuals, but the film dose not give us the chance. So we make broad emotional generalization. This is the beginning of the well meaning subjugation
of those poor people. Wood decreasing their mobility make it better for the individuals, perhaps we should ask them, as apposed to video taping their dwellings on a rainy day.

Instead of dissecting or criticizing the video just ask your self where you have seen this in such proportions in America leaving out the remnants of natural disaster.
In most citys these places are scattered but the people exist. I met a family working at a restaurant's last summer. Man,wife and two kids. Living in their car. Guy had a good job at the papermill and soon it was gone, then the unemployment was gone then the house was lost.
They ended up in their car, terrified child protective would find out and take the kids. So they both begged up a job at a diner to get enough cash to travel south for the winter.
God bless them in their quest and I always end up wondering how they are doing.
Its all kinds of people out there. If your really interested go ask.
I am just afraid we will soon see these camps all over the country in sizes far beyond what we are seeing now.

:D:D

Whether one asks "them" or video tapes "them" is beside the point. "They" are not doing well. The cars and caravans suggest that "they" used to be comfortably middle class and now "they" are up sh!t creek in a barbed wire canoe without a paddle, aren't "they"?

Raising some degree of awareness of such a situation is still doing much more than doing nothing. Now whatcha gonna do with this knowledge of "them"?

Well then maybe the end of the inflationary speculator driven real estate market is not a bad thing. How about low land prices,
rather than high mortgages. But the current tax structure will not make that possible.

Hey there is lots of land in Maine, how about the gov. selling it to them. Nice wood lots too.

Exactly, but it will not happen. We will watch our big screen TV's and be spoon fed propaganda, like which of the "approved" candidates to vote for in fraudulent elections and wait for our 600 dollar check so we can buy that new Blue Ray machine.

350 poor people living in shanties in southern california and you extrapolated into a nationwide pandemic ????:rolleyes:

There are more people living under Grand Central Station than in that shanty town. There are homeless people ALL OVER living in a state of HELL. I've been poor hell I could be poor again. I've always MANAGED. The video should explain the whole story of how they got there. The idea that its just the MAN and big government trying to beat down on the poor hard working, honest man. Probably isn't 100% truthful. Lots of abuse of all sorts, mental problems, substance problems, bad luck, ignorance, poor coping skills contribute greater to their plight than the story book analogy of the hard working white man providing for his family and then his plant is shut down and he looses everything and lives with his family in a tent on the side of the road. eeeeeek with no internet connection :)

The video SHOWS nothing and might I add was poorly made and does a total disservice to the subject matter, but the music was a good choice  You fault me for showing a bike that can produce potable water yet this vid does LESS THAN NOTHING.

The cars and caravans suggest that "they" used to be comfortably middle class.

With advent of sub-prime mortgage fiasco, the people hurt were the people below middle class trying to live like the middle class and realize the American Dream. You to can live like the "Rich and Famous" for no money down and low low payments each month (or until the low low introductory interest rate ends and you are stuck with high interests rates you can't afford). They are worse off now, no hope in securing a loan until the economy adjusts itself over the coming years.

When In actuality the tent city has been growing since way before the sub-prime collapse. It also is sadly proven that most of its inhabitants are victims of exactly what I said, abuse of all sorts, mental problems, substance problems, bad luck, ignorance, poor coping skills.

No mater how you want to project towards me, it wont make your apocalyptic pandemic predictions true.

I grew up that kind of poor and it was of my own mothers' doing. NOT because the "man" was oppressing us. She finally saw the way out and started working three jobs toward that goal. She now has a home paid for and retirement saved up and is living her life.

Those people are there because of their choices in life. PERIOD.

I agree... But to think all these people planned on ending up here is wrong. Different things happen to different people.
What would have happened if your mom became ill, or some other crossroad was met at the wrong time.
Once you fall, its damn near impossible to climb out.
To say all these people are just substance abusers and freeloaders is like me saying they are all Mother Theresa.

There are no right answers except that we never saw this as widespread as before and its getting worse.
Should we just ignore that? Heard them into camps and gas them?

The issue that I thought Mark is discussing is the failure in the sub-prime mortgage market. It has nothing to do with the government. It has everything to do with greed.
The mortgage business is broken and needs to be fixed. The mortgage brokers have no stake in the viability of the deals they broker. Once they write the deal, they get their fee and have no further stake in the deal. The banks get greedier, allow the brokers to sell mortgages that were bound to fail, and are now crying for help. It isn't the government that will bail them out, it's us. In the mean time the source of operating funds for many companies is drying up as the banks hunker down and lick their wounds. With out a normal amount a available loans many companies will be hurt, which in turn impact the employees and investors. Who got rich? bank executives and mortgage brokerages.

A slightly different take on the mortgage promblems is that government did have a lot to do with the current problems.

1st, there was a major change in the US banking laws in the 1990's that changed the character of banks and allowed them to participate in other areas of finance.

2nd, the Fed allowed rates to remain too low for too long, which deluded many into thinking the real estate boom would go on forever.

3rd, state banking regulators did nothing to interefere with some predatory practices affecting dreamy, and perhaps uneducated people with regard to the mortages that were sold.

4th, the SEC and other gov't regulators ignored a lot of financial chicanery performed by the investment entities.

5th, the politicians didn't use their bully-pulpits to warn about the impending problems and let the markets continue unfettered.

Lots of blame to spread around, IMHO.

Woke up this morning and the forums back and this thread is on top so it got me thinking. Mark asked me if I ever did anything to help. Well I'm more of a hands on kinda guy. So when I used to live in Philly or NYC and I would spy a homeless man or woman panhandling I would always give them something, still do. But there have been more than a few times a homeless person would go the extra mile and come up with a really good story about how they were hungry or something. Instead of just giving money I would offer to take them and buy them lunch or dinner. Funny how more than a couple of times they would go no thats OK I'll just take the money. At which point I would usually press the issue, but you said you haven't eaten in days lets go and get you something to eat. On a couple of rare occasions I would get the confession. Listen buddy I can eat all I want at so and so parish and the food is good, I need some money so I can GET HIGH. I would say thanks for finally being honest, now it might be time to be honest with yourself.

But If I saw a cold person on the street I would come back with a coat and they were very appreciative. Speaking of the iPhone I even recycled my old cell phones to a place that gave them out to woman in abusive situations so they could call 911.

Most important to people that I know who are going through any hard time I'm there above an beyond. Few years ago I had a friend who's husband was a prick, she left with three kids and no place to go. They all lived with me for a couple of weeks until she could figure it out. My pull out is always available and my cupboards are open to anyone who knows me. And THATS what most people need is a good support system of friends and relatives, when they get caught in a jam.

Dude, I was waiting for you to say you perform sex acts on the homeless...to ease their suffering.
The people in Cold Spring are so giving.. as long as they stay out of you neighborhoods.

I like you Joe, but you do get tiresome from time to time. I couldn't resist. Anyway, arguing with Mark takes special training in working with paranoia. The first lesson is that the worst thing you can do is argue with a paranoid. This gives them the "someone's out to get me" the paranoid needs to stay paranoid.

There is probably some kind of middle ground to be had here:

1. Not all homeless people are drug-addicts and not all homelessnes in the USA is due to structural problems in the economy and failure in government services.

2. A proportion of homeless people are homeless because of substance abuse and rotten choices and a proportion of homeless people have been made homeless because of structural problems in the economy and failure in government services.

3. Both of you, Mark and Joe, I'm absolutely sure, do the good Samaritan thang whenever you come across people in need.

4. That shanty towns exist in a country that squnders so much filthy wonga on a useless war is just plain wrong.

Can we agree on this much?

Milo, Was I paranoid about the housing bubble/ derivatives over a year ago?

Is it paranoid if it comes to be?

Check back next year and we will see how many are living in tents in comparison to this year.

I live in a state which has a bit of a backwoods or country economy.
The average rent for a one bedroom apt. is $750 and up.
One must pass a credit check to qualify for all but the worst.
Minimum wage will barely cover the rent alone. And jobs are becoming very scarce.

No problem with homelessness here?

For a scenic shanty town check out the ocean access at Navarro Beach where Hwy 128 and 1 intersect. Actually it's not a shanty town but it's nice when the fog lifts.

Joe, how'd you get that so quick?

Here's why it's cool, where that photo is taken is a telephoto halfway down Hwy1 on the other side. When you're riding a bicyle south it's down wind and then down hill. You can FLY down it.

I'm guessing the parking lot gets cleared out regularly but I was surprised to see it become more of semishanty lot one year.

Just south of there is the climb up Cameron Road to Greenwood Ridge/Philo Rd. Gorgeous, gorgeous riding.

Notice the use of "Schindlers List" music ? In an attempt to imply that the homeless here are all" victims" of a US style ecomonic 'holocost'?

Just propoganda.

Let's look at the real numbers . Unempolyment is around 5 percent. That is an very low number.
Jimmy Carter?
10 percent and higher.
The last rate I saw for a 30 year fixed mortgage around 6 percent.
Jimmy Carter?
18 percent.
You lost your credibility with this statement:

"Its like me living in Kenebunk next to the Nazi family Bush and saying there is no homeless issue."

There's enough controversy about the Bush's Nazi business dealings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prescott_Bush#Nazi_collaboration_controversy)that it's a valid historical statement.

Barbara Bush: Things Working Out 'Very Well' for Poor Evacuees from New Orleans

By E&P Staff

Published: September 05, 2005 7:25 PM ET updated 8:00 PM
NEW YORK Accompanying her husband, former President George
H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in
Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the
poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, "This is working very well for them."

The former First Lady's remarks were aired this
evening on American Public Media's "Marketplace"
program.

She was part of a group in Houston today at the
Astrodome that included her husband and former
President Bill Clinton, who were chosen by her son,
the current president, to head fundraising efforts for
the recovery. Sen. Hilary Clinton and Sen. Barack
Obama were also present.

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of
evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost
everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to
Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of
scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is
so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

Bank of America was making loans to illegalswho couldn't even speak english. They were issuing credit cards to illegals. Making loans , mostly adjustable, with no money down, inflating the appraised value of homes, and making " equity" loans on that inflated value.
So now, instead of a 100,00 mortgage on a home, you have a 300,000 mortgage on a home thats really worth 150,000. So that means that you cannot refinance it because it will now not appraise for the exisitng mortgage!
So your intrest only, adjustable mortgage went from a $1100 payment to $2800.
The mortgage crisis will weed out the people who should have never recieved these loans in the first place!

BOA losses in the last quarter were 15 BILLION dollars.

Maybe they should send their collection notices in Spanish to the tent city.

They won'r be, the CEO of Countrywide who has been paid 400 million dollars in salary so far, drove it into the ground, just got fired, but guess what?

He has a contract which says if he goes, he gets 81 million in severence.

The illegals are just an illustration as well as part of the problem. There is no accountibility in this. The banks, the real estate brokers and the real estate speculators are the culprit here. I bring up the illegals not to blame only them, but to illustrate just how far the banks etc would go.
I live in Florida where the illegals are now self deporting because the construction industry is dead.
The real estate market is dead. The mortgae broker fast buck artists are gone.
One of my friends is a home builder. Last year he built 125 houses in Lehigh Fl. He just went BK.
Another friend just refinanced his house. Luckly, he had not borrowered against it. Guess what?
The bank now required a 700 beacon credit score and more than 20 percent equity AFTER the new loan.

To be clear, I'm not a Bush fan, I guess you'd say the Kennedy's are nazis because Joe Sr. was a Nazi sympathizer and was booted out from England?

I don't think I said that in this particular case but ...

The gentleman was responsible to the shareholders. I suspect he did well for some of them. I suspect the last ones out will curse him.

Bank of America seems to have tossed a couple billion toward Countrywide. On that alone the CEO seems to have been worth the $500 million he has been paid.

---

I am sorry you think the damage the company did to the economy is his fault and you want a pound or more of his flesh.

Go get him.

---

Everyday in every market people have been going bankrupt or have been foreclosed on for decades. You guys are upset that a lot of people have chosen to have the problem today.

Not one of you questioned easy money when you needed it. Yes, some of you have never needed it , but you still would not have questioned it.

Lots of problems. Lots of blame. We all need to accept some.
