Does anyone have any working knowlege on the whether or not a Beta Marine is a step up or a step down when repowering a 40 foot yawl that crreuntly has a 27 horse Yanmar?

Nope, I've been looking into them myself. In two weeks, I'll be back aboard Royaliste, and since they are in NC, I might stop in and get up close and personal with one..Whassup with the Yanmar??
Ken Hutchins has one and he's certain to have researched everything about them.
Their website (http://www.betamarinenc.com/enginemodels.htm) says 37.5 HP

I have a 27 Horse Yamar in the boat now. The boat is new to me and being restored over the winter by Concordia Company. The Yanmar that is in it now is being substancially rebuilt and is like new the engine and other restoration photos can be viewed at www.concordia-yawl-weatherly.com (http://www.concordia-yawl-weatherly.com). From what I understand the Yamar's viobrate more. Beta's are designed with servicing in mind. Since I am moving toeard a more powerful engine, I wanted to cansider the Beta if it's performance is as good or better.

Mine is 50 hp TALLY HO is heavy boat, 16 tons.
The other factor for me is the current in Hew Hampshire and Maine. you don't have that problem in Naragansett bay.
The 38 hp should be good for you, that will be much better than than 27 Yanmar, more power is good.
The reason for Beta, Kubota of course, I have a 1976 Kubota tractor that I have been beating the crap of the only,:) the only problems have caused by my abuse.:D

What is the Yamner 2 or 3 cylinders ?
The Beta 36 is a 4 cylinder, more cylinders less vibrations.

The Yamar 27 is a 4 cylinder. Enought HP for Narragansett Bay but not enough for a passage into Buzzards Bay through the Cape Cod Canal unless it is timed perfectly in relation to the tides.

Also.....if you have the space.....an Aquadrive CV union between the transmission and prop shaft will allow much softer mounts. A 50 hp beta with Aquadrive inside a engine space with 1 inch of sound dampening is almost unfelt and unheard from 5 feet away when running low rpms.....
