Saw a link to this from a local classified site. I really like a.) that an old boat has been saved and b.) many of the unusual and interesting ideas incorporated in the finished product. Enjoy.

Amazing indeed! Although I have to wonder about putting a steering wheel on a 15 foot row boat.......

Love the boat, must be a great rowing boat. I agree with Peter about the wheel - stick steering would have been lighter and more appropos, IMHO. Very nice to see such a complete and detailed resoration, but my, what a colour scheme!

A really well done boat. I like the colors but I think there's just a bit too much green.

Interesting color choice, but wow, what a great job. A lot of thought and detail.

That's the luckiest little boat on earth.

What are the odds that when I'm old and gray, the somebody will take me back into their barn and turn me into a kid again? More likely, it'll be a one way trip out back of the woodshed.

Ditto on the lucky boat thought. I would think that the boat once had a sculling socket in the transom that was widened out to accommodate an outboard. Quite frankly, I see no reason for the rudder and wheel as the oarsman or men should be fully capable of guiding this easily driven hull. That is, unless a sailing rig were to be incorporated.

Nice to know there are folks that feel the same as I, that there's something about a wooden boat that nearly always make the effort to save her worthwhile. I was thinking along these lines this morning as I was reefing out seam compound on a dinghy I'm working on. It probably would make a really nice bonfire but there's a lot more to get from her than heat. I found the work done on this little boat, regardless of colour scheme or add-ons, really inspiring.

I don't know what it is, while there is always a lump in my chest when I see a derelict boat, but when it's wooden the pain is more acute.

I was remiss in not posting the original add...as always, I've no connection or interest with the seller... here's the link: http://victoria.craigslist.ca/boa/539269011.html

I'm going to drop him a line to let him know I've posted the photos here and I think he'll enjoy the comments.

Yeadon, your note pretty well sums it up for me...

Well, my guess is that it is a very old outboard boat. Maybe 20s or 30s. The transom is dragging in the water, yet it is not completely flat.

The steering gizmos look not well thought out. The control line pulls sideways on the yoke. Not right in esthetically or correct in an engineering sense.

Nar, you guys are looking at it too hard.
The wheel is for SWMBO to sit there in the stern beating time for the rowers/s while she steers all over the place and enjoys the views. :D

I'm afraid I'm going to throw a spanner in here , just a personal spanner though .

To my eye she is way over "restored",I like the first picture much more than the last .I know that she needed work to continue to exist , but it should be done with much more sensitivity to the "patina" of all those years .

I have real trouble with the boats as furniture mindset ....as you can see .:D

Totally agree there Peter!

They have added:
diagonal laminate strips which have been epoxied into position adding weight to the boat, rather than replacing any planking that may have degraded. I can just see problems down the line there in so many regards, not the least of which is a complete inability to easily replace planks.

Sorry to say it, but in looks like the worst type of fairy-floss cosmetic make-over: Lipstick and rouge and nothing else! IMHO they have wrecked a perfectly good boat that required only the barest minimum of restoration.

Awesome.... Agree about the wheel but I really think that is nitpicking considering...:D

Interesting detail on the oarlock leathers. I always thought that leather was for chafe between the oarlock and the oar.

Somebody's pride and joy I realize but I'll side with those who feel it's a little overdone. Somebody got just a weee bit carried away. Unless this is a traditional way to paint these boats in which case I take it all back.

Yea, a classic hull was taken and turned into a rap mentality project. To bad that the "preservation" was not directed towards RESTORATION rather than an attempt at self expression a la art deco mentality. Truly in this instance less would definitely have been more.

It gets worse people:

This shot shows a noticeable twist in the bow which was removed when it was in the stages of cold moulding.

Would not have a bit of ol' time replanking remove said twist? Ostensibly they've taken a traditional carvel pulling boat and turned it into a modern cold molded boat. They show only one set of diagonals going on, and then the outer skin is a re-appearance of "carvel" planking. Surely if they were skilled enough to cold mold, then spile and bevel a set of outer strips they could have done the job properly in the first place.

IMHO the colour scheme is not 'deco' but nearing a state of Liberace vommit! Art Deco was far more restrained as a style compared to this Disneyesque sploge! There's not accounting for taste, is there!!! I mean some people listen to Michael Bolton!! Thud thud!! :D:D
