I have a theory that your dogs name can't be more than one or two syllables, and it has to be something you can shout quickly at the top of your lungs.

Had a friend with an Old English Sheepdog named "Shadow Who Walks Through the Woods". Can you imagine yelling that?

A dog needs a handy short name which you can yell in public - a brother in law called his lab retriever "Kinky" - not good in public.

The fancy name is ok for formal occasions.

SWMBO is getting a purebred Newfoundland next month. Well, I suppose we're both getting the dog. The Kennel name is Birchbark Newfoundlands. Each litter has a theme for the names. The father of the puppy we're getting was Birchbark Return of the King of Helluland. They just call him Elvis.

When SWMBO told me what the dog was going to cost, I suggested we name her Birchbark Cheaper than a Snowmobile, Just Barely. SWMBO wants to call her Bree.

Collie's are good dogs, loyal and smart.
Congratulations!

All of our animals have a regular name and a nickname.
The nickname gets used more often.

For example, "Fat Bob", my cat was fat when we got him but now he's not very fat. We could have just called him "Bob" but he earned the nickname "Stinky". http://www.woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin/upload/images/icons/icon10.gif

My Dad always talked about getting a dog and naming him Dammit so he could stand on the front porch of our home in Birmingham, Mi. and scream "Dammit get in here!" at the top of his lungs.
My MIL from my first marriage had a cat named Spook. She lived in a "mixed race" neighborhood. She's been known to stand on the porch and yell "Spook! Get your black ass in the house now!" She scared the crap out of more than one young black man.

You really are dead set on humilliating this poor dog into a life of ridicule and shame aren't you?
<Proper upper crust Brit accent> "I say! Monty! Stop that this instant! I SAY! Monty.... It is not seemly to chew on ones person's sofa cushions!..... Now NOW! I say Monty! It is also not acceptable to......I say! MONTY! STOP THAT THIS INSTANT!, Or I shall be forced to call the authorities!...." ;)

'Titan'. I guess that it is appropriate in that he is pretty titanic as far as his size and sometimes, disposition, but I always thought that it was kind of a dumb name. Still, it is his name and I couldn't change it (we got him from a shelter. He already had the name).

I always name my animals people names. I have a dog named Bill. A cat named Bob (a female with a bob tail). And so on. My beloved Bassett was named Gus. My next one will be named Woodrow if I get him as a puppy.

Katherine, your puppy is beautiful. I grew up with a collie down the street named Jack. As I recall he was slightly high strung but a wonderful friend to all of us kids. I hope that you and your puppy have a great life together.

Baby sis named the dog "Kat" and the cat "Dawg".......and you think Katherine is being confusing. My pinto pony was named Walela, and it was tooled into the leather harness that I made.....when someone asked how to pronounce it I just gave a short whistle and she would trot over to me and stick her nose in my hip pocket or shirt pocket looking for a carrot......just like the puppy dawg...one short whistle and she stops and looks and waits for a commend...two short whistles and here she comes.....

Well, Monty had his first obedience class Thursday evening. Turns out I have the most disruptive puppy in the class. He is currently in his crate right behind my computer chair. Beautiful puppy :)

How about naming him Hank as in "Hank The Cowdog" stories.

Great reading or listening for dog lovers.

Hank and Dover live at a farm/ranch. Hank considers himself the head of the ranch security. His sidekick is Dover and there is Pete the barn cat whom Hank dislikes with venom.....Then there is Baulah, the object of his affections...

I just hope modern printings of Terhune's books haven't had the writing "Updated." They are not always politically correct by modern standards, but then again the stories are almost a century old. The dogs in the books were very real and Lad is said to be the inspiration behind the creation of Lassie. As for inspiring, the initially inspired my Grandmother, who gave the books to my Mother when she was young. My mother in turn gave them to me after they gave me my first collie. Terhune raised collies because he loved them but he was particular about his breeding program. As a result, he bred very high quality dogs. Most modern collies can trace their bloodlines back to his kennel.

I went into the Air Force in the late 50's and was assigned my first stateside permanent duty station in 1960....As an E-4 I was allowed to live off base...and my first pup was a Collie named Scooter. We were stationed in S.C. at the time....and my off duty time was spent a few miles from the base at an archery range or rifle/pistol ranges. Pup would whine and cry if I was going somewhere, so as a result everywhere I went, the pup went...but the result was a well trained pup..all I had to do was snap my fingers to get his attention, then give him a hand signal to sit or whatever....Most any animal will take on the characteristics of the owner, so when people say a dog is bad, I inquire as to the owner..

I've found that I hate being separated from Monty more then I absolutely have to. His crates in my bedroom just so I can hear him if he needs anything at night. On the weekends we spend most of the time together. He's getting pretty good at responding to basic hand and voice commands. Tonight he even managed to stay focused one me while the cat circled around him.:D

If I bring the crate upstairs , open the door, snap my fingers and point inside, Little Critter will get a sullen look with her big brown eyes and just look at me, but go inside.....She's been inside once in the last 3-4 years, when she was being transported with me from the hospital and she was being cared for by a lady from the local kennel club. She has a collar which I put on her when we go out the door, and a leash (leash Laws)...but I fold up the leash and give it to her to carry....
Local cop stopped me one day and said my dog was supposed to be on a leash.....I said "she is"....he just looked and smiled. ...and we go for our walks. When we get to the beach I take off the leash and let her run, but now we're going back to the boatyard for our runs, someone has been breaking bottles at our beach and she got a piece of glass in her paw...so yesterday it was a trip to the vet.

REALLY NICE...:)

I've always had dogs and cats. Many good dogs but the best one was a Australian Shepherd named Sister. -Talk about smart and sensitive. I think she'd read my mind. I just thought of something and she got it. Great at pushing cattle. Never stole food from the table or counter. Just a wonderful dog. Loyal and loving :) toward family. Great watch dog and physically beautiful too...
