I am replacing the bottom on an old mohogany raceboat. 1935 24' Greavette. I'm interested in some feedback on the advantages of the traditional Dolfinite and canvas, the west type botton, and using something like 5200 to attach the planking?

mike, i'm an amateur but have used a combination of west to encapsulate the wood then bed it all in 3m. works great seems to be holding on our chris just fine. i've talked to others including pros. who like it and others who like traditional or west.

Mike, borrow or obtain (1-262-567-4800) issue #76 of Classic Boating Magazine. In it is an article I wrote as an overview of bottom restoration methods for Mahogany runabouts. It will give you an idea of what to expect from each, based on my experiences on over 100 boats. Don

Mike, before you do ANYTHING involving epoxy, read Danenberg's Classic Boat article. I learned a bunch about old powerboat hulls from that article. There's a LOT more to it than just soaking them in googe and stapling a sheet of plywood on them, IF you want your boat to last past your next birthday. An excellent article!

I can't remember the name of the guy or where I read the story (now ain't that a big help) but he's somewhere in So.Cal. and he restores old runabouts and race boats for collectors. Maybe it was W.B. Whatever. The bottoms take a huge beating and the original raceboats were never ment to last longer than this season. He uses plywood on the bottoms to take the beating and plans to loose a few points at those Concours d' Anal competitions. I guess it all depends on how you plan to use the thing. I expect there are honest philosophical differences on both sides of that. Are "things" to be used or merely admired?

Yea, but if you want it done right without losing points at the concours, check out Danenberg's Classic Boat article. I think his approach has the others beat hands down, and he gives a lot of technical reasons why. Wouldn't hurt if WB reprinted it.

I want to thank every one for their suggestions. Itseems pretty clear how to proceed. My plan is to seal everything with Smith co penetrating epoxey sealer, and bed the planks in 5200. I will fair the hull, sand, and seal. Then proceed with bottom coating. Thanks again.
