Some of you may have run into Dan Mendini (who styled himself "The Shanty Man") along the East coast of the US sometime in the past thirty years... he was a tall-ship sailor and performer of sea songs, a repository of sea-going lore and most recently was crew aboard the Gazela Primera out of Philadelphia.

Dan passed last nite due to complications of heart disease, diabetes and depression, exacerbated by the wonderful care and loving attention afforded him by the VA system.

He'll be missed.

Off to his favourite bar (The Mermaid Inn) in about an hour... we've got to get Philadelphia back on an even keel and we'll try to do that by pumping out the whisky casks... might get back a few degrees of bubble.

If you're able, wherever you are at about 21:00 EST, hoist one for the Auld Lad.

Sorry :(

I'll hoist one now with a good thought on a good man's passing just in case I'm not up that late. ;)

Cheers!

Thanks to all who replied and sent PMs.

It was a wonderful drunken nite and would've pissed off Dan immensley.

Major triumph. We sang every song he hated.

Fair winds, following seas and a snug berth to him.

Your support was appreciated.
