Hello,

below is a photo from an ancient Roman oil lamp which I found intriguing. Would you agree that the boat on the right with the man fishing inside is fitted with a stern-mounted rudder?

If so, what is the right terminology for that rudder (Iamnonativespeaker): steering oar, steering paddle or is steering rudder just alright?

Thanks in advance.

Alas, I do not think it is a stern mounted rudder; I think it is the prow.

Alas, I don't believe it's Roman either. It feels more medieveal.

I vote with Andrew. It is really hard to turn a rudder if all you have is a rounded post. Also the Romans (and lots of others) often decorated their stems.
