Hi All, I will start stripping my haul after the first of the year. So I do I go about remembering and then remarking the waterline and boot stripe? I know there is probable a very simple answer, but I just can't think of it. Here is the bottom in question. Cheers.

The water line is often lightly etched into the hull.

One way is to make a mark at intervals with a fine knife. This gives you the basis for the new stripe when you are ready to lay the tape.

Measure down from the sheer at two foot intervals or so and write down the measurements on a piece of paper? When I recently repainted I didn't bother to remove every last speck of old paint so the line was still easy to make out.

Hi Allan, I'd like to come over and see Laura Ellen sometime after the first of the year. I will be back from FL. on Jan 8 2008. Cheers.

Thanks Paul and Jim and Allan. I don't look forward to this job but with the help of day labor from Home Depot, it should go fairly quick. Cheers.

Some builders cut the bootstripe in very lightly with a saw. It also gives an edge to paint to when hauling out (if you use a brush that is).

In days of yore we used a RACE KNIFE to cut in the Waterline.
Bootstripe could change according to owners taste so that was not marked in but, layed out using measurements from the W/L.

My Chris Craft has the waterline scribed into the hull... I discovered this when I refinished the hull and topsides a few years back... The waterline stripe was about 3 inches higher than originally intended

That's what happens over time, change of engines, load, moisture in wood etc..

Before I strip a boat, I sometimes take a batten and use a small back saw alongside. Jap back saw works nicely to establish the line. Kim Lazar used to used one of those Stanley Handyform carbide files to "chamfer" the edges of the waterline back a bit. I'm not as particular as Kim is.

I have been taught that when building a one off it was usual to only cut in the bootstripe before launching as the actual waterline was not known until the boat was in the water. Waterlines were then cut in at first haul out.

True and good practice that.

Paint boat white. Launch boat....load friends and gear on board to emulate what you think you will carry.....carefully walk around boat with large bottle of red food dye......wait until morning...unload boat...haul boat...paint waterline.....
