Looking at some of the prices being asked for 28-38' wooden boats, I'm not surprised they are still on the market.:eek::rolleyes:

I'd like Violet for the extra 10' of space....

Yet, handling/maintaining/mooring that extra 10'.....

Maybe Zulu would be better.

Zulu is on the docks at CWB in Seattle. She was recently purchased by a volunteer. They brought her down a month or two ago. Really, really nice boat.

I mean she is authentic

Violet is a is a real Scottish Zulu was built in 1911 to a design which evolved in the late 1880s in the Scottish fishing fleet.

Zulu on the other hand is a modern shrunk down rendition of a Zulu...
"Yachtified" if you will....

"Yachtified" if you will....I don't think her design is based on that of a Scot Zulu.

Its based upon a workboat of some type. Being built in 1992, I would say that she is a modern rendition of something.

Violet is the real McCoy.

Zulu was named, as I understand, by George and Julia to honor Violet, and her restoration.

Zulu was designed by the builders and it resembles, to my eye, a combination of Spray, and the Seagoer (Pigeons Islander).

George circumnavigated in his engineless Spray replica. When he was building Zulu, he was asked if he was installing an engine.

"Yes"

"Good, you must have learned something...what type?"

"Sabb 10hp"

"You didn't learn much did you..."

Violet is one hell of a vessel. I haven't followed their exploits, but I watched with interest when they rebuilt her in the pages of WB. Very skilled people with the gift of youthful enthusiasm.

I wouldn't begin to know how to manage her at sea, but I wonder if a good place for her might be as a sail training vessel? IIRC she's stoutly built. Two week trips to Labrador anyone? Maybe an extended cruise to Iceland or Europe? Something along the lines of the original Yankee and Wanderbird but, obviously, on a smaller scale.

With our youth at loose ends these days there's definately a need. I wonder if there's a market. It seems, from my remove, that there are probably a lot more complications than when the Johnsons took Yankee to sea with an amateur crew. Fear of litigation, insurance costs, etc.

Sounds like a project for you Jack. What's the status of your volunteering in the community?
