Hello,
Two weeks ago I shut down my restaurant I have had for the last five years and started looking for other employment. In the down time of job hunting I started building a 15.5' sloop called the Crescent. I bought some old magazine article from a 1957 Popular Mechanix that was a two part series on building this boat. I really liked the lines and size. The plans showed the stem and frame and transom deminsions so that is what I drew up this week. The frames and chines are built from 1x3 oak and 1/4"ply so that should be easy to find locally. The Stem is proving more dificult as it calling for a 2 3/4" by 8" by piece of lumber. I guess I will have to laminate some 1x8 and plane it down, or is there a better way?
Alos, any wooden boat builders in my part of the country that knows where to buy 1/4 and 3/8 marine ply closer than either coast?!?!

Fine Lumber & Plywood Inc. (http://www.finelumber.com/) in Austin sells marine ply.

Houston Hardwoods Inc. (http://www.houstonhardwoods.com/) also sells marine ply.

Maybe somebody else knows of a dealer in the Dallas / Fort Worth area that might be closer to you.

That is beautiful sloop. I have often looked at the lines from that article.

Thanks, I hope to have an interview in Austin next week, so I will definitely check them out.

I know. I saw that boat on the internet several years ago, but couldn't track down the plans. Then one day on ebay I found them for $4. I also got a set of plans from a 1941 British mag for a boat called the Petrel. It too is 15.5' but can be built with or with out a cabin . It is an interesting read because I picture 1941 Britain as nothing but war time stuff, but there is no hint of it here!
I thought about a Snipe or Lightning, but the cost of the plans for those is about the cost of the frame lumber so i guess I am ahead of the game!
