This is making me nuts, and google isn't helping.
I have a loose memory of a boat built a few years ago, possibly in the UK, styled as something like a Grey Seal, with a really innovative electric drive. Designed around using the batteries as ballast, I think.
Does this sound familiar to anyone else?
Yep, I remember the one you were talking about. I think the last I read it burned to the water while cruising. Something about filling a generator with gas, but I could be wrong. Pretty sad anyway.

Tom Goodwin from Nassau had a smallish ketch (or was it a sloop?) built by a yard up in Nova Scotia (I think it was NS) which had a solar-electric auxilliary in which the batteries served as a good portion of the ballast. The boat was in a recent WB issue but many of the details currently escape me.
The only reason I can recall the owner's name was his brother served with me in the US Navy way back in the day. I've lost touch with Pat but he told me enough about his brother Tom to recognize his story when word got out about his new boat--from Nassau, sea-plane pilot, naturalist and water colorist, etc.

Spark! Man what a beauty. The website shows up as restricted. Her builder posted here for a while. Malcolm? I wish I had saved all the pics.

I just remembered the Wayback Machine! To the rescue:

Not everything is there, but some still is. I think she burned at her mooring, not while cruising. What a tragedy. Malcolm Henry I think was the builder's name. There might be some stuff in our own archives, too.

IIRC, both Doug Hylan and Damian McLaughlin have done Rozinantes with electric propulsion.

Yep, that's the one. Thanks guys.
I hadn't heard about the loss. That's a damned shame.

I think she burned at her mooring, not while cruising. What a tragedy. Had something to do with a portable backup gasoline-electric generator I think.:(:(:(
