Our old (1919) cruiser has an old four-cylinder Gray Marine engine in her. I need help figuring out what model the engine is, and what year it was built.

Here's all I know: on the clutch housing, the plate says "Gray Marine / Express / Four-162 / With Individual Porting / Eng. No. 62252 ". Stamped on the manifold is the number "55070" and the numbers "1-24-5".

Am I right to infer that this is a 162 cc displacement engine? As I understand it, there are at least two different Gray Marine 162 cc engines -- the "Phantom Series" "high speed" engine called the "Four-75", and the medium- to heavy-duty engine called the "Four-52". Any thoughts as to which this is?

Also, any way to to tell when this engine was built?

Thanks for any help/advice.

The graymarine express 4-162 is rated 63 hp at 3000rpm. My research indicates that the various models use the same basic block. Carburation and rpm diffences are responsible for the horsepower ratings. The engine rebuilders that advertise in the back of Woodenboat can supply you with any needed parts as well as date of manufacture.
