Got a great line on a 70s model 26ft TIMBER Kentcraft today... absolute ball tearer of a price... one problem and a question... it has two volvo pentas ones stuffed (seized) but the others fine how much drama is it to fix one of these vovlo buggars?... so far its the only issue I know of with it apparently the blokes about to move her from Perth to Rockingham on the water so its seaworthy at least... will need to look into mooring costs and making up a jinker to get her out of the water to check her over and do the work on her buggared motor... but still

Would be interested to know if anyone has a clue (Aussie wise that is)

Could you post your responses here? The ISP shuts me down on the 23rd - 24th and Im not renewing it so will try to access from the library if I can... any help you can give would be appreciated.. I'll turn on the email and pm thing again till the things shut down that way if you want you can zap me an email or pm

problem? a couple actually... but firstly well it dont have sails  secondly things arent exactly conducive to buyin boats workin on boats or anything other than me buggarizin off to the bush... not good but still Im thinking maybe live aboard? at least it will keep me close and handy to the hoons for awhile

Cheers

A seized engine in a boat - lets assume something nasty - like salt water thats been in there how long? Could be very nasty.

My two Detroits - 4 cylinder engines - cost me about $22,000 to rebuild in 2001 - but then the dollar was weak at the time - but I also did a lot of the work.

So - the cheap way out is to find another engine - second hand and go from there. Big issue is - is it a counter-rotating pair, and if so, which engine is stuffed? If it is the counter-rotating one ..... then its likely to be harder to find.

At the other end of the scale - I've heard of people getting supposedly siezed engines going quite easily - but I wouldn't bank on it.

Good luck.

You sound like you may be on the move?

Do they really bother to make diesels that rotate the opposite for counter rotating props.. surely its in the gearbox... isn't it?

John - here's the matched pair on Grantala

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff112/igatenby/bi3.jpg

Not a brilliant illustration - but you can pick up that the various bits are reversed - the generators (remember those old things) oil filters and fuel setups are on the inside of the engines - the airboxes on the outside. They really do counter-rotate, but the biggest issue I had was with the backwards starter motor.

The Borg Warner gearboxes need to be set up so that they lubricate correctly. They don't lubricate in reverse, so the pump on the box for the counter-rotating engine needs the pump reversed - or - it will fail in short order.

Yes - if they aren't a matched set - it is done with the boxes
