Hi Guys, I am new to the site and I am impressed with the information you share. I note there is some "feeling" about traditional and modern ideas, I must confess I want to be a traditionalist but I don't have the knowledge or skills yet. That's why I am here, to see what you can do to help me restore a 1924 Teak yawl.
To start with I am looking for a simple line drawing of yawl rig for a 40' on deck 54' over all. There are stainless fittings on deck but 2 of them have fatigue cracks and they hold up a 60' solid Origon main mast, so I think I need to get the rig right!
I will be glad of any assistance except "buy and aluminium mast".
Cheers Craig

Craig, there are numerous factors that need to be presented when a rig is designed or changed on a a boat, especially one of this size... Some pictures of your boat would be a good start. Do you know the designer? If so, the sail plan and rig design may still exist. This is not an area for an amateur, since there is not only a lot of money involved, but very large stresses at work. How much of the rig still exists? Any sails to work with? Is it a gaff rig? Double headsail? How much ballast? What is the hull design... a cruiser? a racer? All these questions need to be answered before any drawing would be of any use at all..:)

You Guys are unbelievable I had not even closed the browser and the was an answer!
I appreciate that this is not an area for an amatuer, I really wanted to know if changing back to the original rig is possible and have some idea of what I was talking about with a professional rigger.
When I first bought the boat it was a wreck, the deck was a real mess and I was told to sand it and two pot epoxy cover it to stop it leaking. $A3,000 later and six months in the sun and it was the same as the day I started, so I am now very cautious about advice where money changes hands. I will look up as much relevant information as I can and see what you can advise me with rig design so I can at least talk to a rigger with some confidence.
Thanks very much for welcoming a new sailor so openly.
Cheers Craig.

There are professional riggers that post in here. I am sure they will be along shortly.
It is always possible as long as the money holds out. Some of the builds and restorations in here go way past monetary considerations.
Great group of people in here. If you go below the deck just remember to put on your thick hide.

Hi Craig, I was new to this forum this year after I bought my 36'er. You will find all the help you need here....it is truley a great group of people. Two things though; 1. post as many pictures as you can. It really helps everyone understand your issues much faster. 2. the guy that totally rebuilt my boat (I'm talking about taking it down to the bare hull inside and out, then building totally new interior, deck, and cabin top) had NO previous wood working experience. It took him a while but man did he get it right. Cheers and good luck.

Hi Craig,

welcome to the forum. That sounds like a decent size project for you to take on! Are you at 42 south as your name suggests? if so, send me a pm as I am in Hobart and could come and have a look at it with you.

regards,

AD

To answer some of the question I have come up with these detail to date;
Do you know the designer? Ted Geary of Seattle and built in 1924 in Hong Kong, original name Minena.
How much of the rig still exists? Unknown as it may not be original as there is a furler headsail and was extensively modified in 1964 whe she was called the "Four Winds of SanFransico".
Any sails to work with? Sails to suit current Bermuda Rig which is original but there does not seem to be enough support for the mast in the modified rig.
Double headsail? Single roller furler but I would like double
How much ballast? 7 to cast iron and concrete filled bilges
All up registered weight is 24 long tons. UK.
What is the hull design.. a cruiser? a racer? Classic wine glass cruiser draft of 7'6".

She is currently moored at Lewisham just out of Hobart in Tasmania Australia.
Thanks to all of you who have been so helpful so far. I am not sure how this posting system works at the moment but I hope to be able to better understand it soon.
