I've got an older hand rip saw that belongs to my Dad's 4th:rolleyes: wife. I promised her two years ago(three in February) that I'd make sure it got back to her. It belonged to her father and the only real value is sentimental. As an apology for being negligent, I'm cleaning it up and refinishing the handle and building a glass wall case for it so I can return it to her. I've sanded off 90% of the rust on the blade and just need to know that once I've removed(solvent) the rest, what's the best one-app finish for the metal? It won't ever be used again- as I've said, it's a sentimental thing and I'm a dick for being negligent towards her.

You could get a can of satin lacquer spray and use that.

Thanks, I'll wait for "the man" and see what he has to say. I don't doubt your wisdom, I just need god to verify it.:)

FWIW: Through the years I've been very active in the sport of fencing. One of the events I particpated in was held up at the Museum of Armor in Worcester MA. Talking with a couple of the curators they use a good quality furniture spray wax on the steel armor and swords to keep the rust away. I've since used similar products on my blades and find they do work remarkably well and for a long time, and aren't subject to the oxidization or UV degradation that most laquers or clear coats are.

Thank you sv Lorelei, it sounds like what I'd do. To be quite honest- I'd still like to hear what Bob has to say- tried and true:)

Buck bet Smalser tells you to blue it! LOL (Which may not be such a bad idea.)

If it's going to live inside a case and the case live indoors, then paste or spray wax followed by a good hand buffing will serve nicely.

Thank you Bob. I knew it'd be simple...just needed you to tell me how simple.
