OK I can't get my hands on a Yachting Federation Rule book so I need some help.
What is the required minium size for a yachts Name and Sail number on the Transom and sides of the Hull.
By memory it's something like "The greater of 50mm or Length x 0.01"
I have my hull repainted and now need to get the lettering on before finishing of the pin striping. I want to put the Class insignia and sail number on one side of the transon and the name on the other. Then all the details in gaps in the pin striping along the sides about 100mm down from the gunnel.
Yacht is a Flying Fifteen so not a lot of topsides in the hull to work with particually down aft.
Thanks Zane

Your minimum looks about half size, if it's at all similar to the US minimum 4" for name and hailing port on documented vessels. The 0.01LOA seems reasonable.

Hi Ian,
Quite possibly it is small as we are talking about International Yacht Federation racing rules requirements which can be very different from local registration requirements.
The IYF rules cover sizes for Dinghy's (like Opti's) right through to 100 ft racing yachts.
In small boats it about being only big enough to read from a patrol boat at close range.

Not my boat but to give an idea of what others have.

I kept a fifteen for a while at Pitsford - and people had a free-and-easy attitude to names.
Some people didn't bother at all.
Some did both bows and the transom.
Some did just the transom.
The rule appeared to be - "If it looks right, It is right".
What do other people in your area do?

Zane, having your Fifteen the letter heights will be easy to approximate.
Most legible isn't always best. Large dark type that looks like it was pulled from a poster presentation at some academic conference ... does not suit the Fifteens at all.

Lighter and airier designs look best on a Fifteen ... if using larger letter sizes.

Splash's lettering looks excellent in sunlight. The rainbow effect sticky-back background behind 'Splash' leaves rainbow reflections in the water, so I'm told. It is only a small sticky-back but it leaves reflections for metres trailing behind the boat.
Advertizing word size and space allocation has maximum restrictions. Advertizing is to be in accordance with ISAF RRS Reg 20 Sect 2 as detailed in the FF Class Rules 17.1 and 2. If you have a main sponsor they are allocated a specific maximum size and placement on the boat and sails. You are also allowed two minor sponsors who can advertize as per the Class Rule 17.1 and 2.

Flying High ... flying high. Flying High was my first FF restoration ... she is a bit special. I'm about to redo the woodwork. I checked her out today, she is about to have her seasonal maintenance. Next week she will get some new paint.

Zane a few more Fifteens to compare your graphics to.

Travelling Sailsman. Although looking darker in the photo below, the value of the tone of the lettering is a grey with an 18% reflectence. The photo doesn't do the signage justice. 'Traveling Sailsman' is within the restrictions for having hull advertizing.

'Mykonos', I will always refer to the rebuilding of 'Mykonos' ... as the makeover from hell! Hopefully Zane, you will never go there. Mykonos' new name now is, 'Left Wings' but personally, I would rather have called Mykonos, Mickey Mouse. Zane, I put Mykonos on here because you said your boat was different, with a wide flat deck? ... and I immediately though of Mykonos with her carrier acreage flight deck. All she is missing is a carrier island and Australia could again have air supperiority of the Great Sothern Ocean.

Photo coming.
Marineworld. About as tasteful as hull signage/advertizing gets. Very understated but totally eye catching when you are close to the boat.

Also the lettering for documented vessels must be "block"(easy to read text), lettering
and include the hailing port. It is a $500.00 fine for non compliance.

Hi Warren,
Just the set of pic's I was looking for.
Looks like I can make my transon lettering larger than the 75mm high that I was going with and get away with it.
Mykonos is a similar set up to what I have but the side decks stay curved and not flatened either side of the cockpit. I do have the island.
Put the mast up last weekend and started playing with setup. Have decided I will have to start at the begining by ploting mast base position and then measuring mast rake. I suspect my new mast step is a little thicker than the old one and even with the turnbuckles right out the foot of the jib was fouling over the splash board and the clue was hard down on the deck and I did not have the leach locked in.
Too much mast rake. Appeared to have enough rig tension but I do need to add some more purchases.
