Loath it or love it, the Maltese Falcon (http://www.symaltesefalcon.com/index2.asp) is quite a little boat:rolleyes:

Though it isn't wooden, and no doubt many here will fall into the prior category above, I'm sure many here would also find interest in it, even if only in technical aspects.
I found this recent link to a video over at boatdesign.net in a thread (http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12459) that has been running for a long time about it (not sure if the video has been posted here yet).
so for anyone who doesn't wander over boatdesign way- or hasn't seen much of this thing, it should be worth watching.
(pitty the sound aint working for me:confused:)

(p.s. don't forget to go fullscreen)
p.s.s. there are also quite a few video's of the less-slick variety on youtube if you do a search.

No. They just revoke their stock options.

That rig is the future. Imagine a 60 foot brig, with masts and spars out of laminated freijo...

Training lots of training or the lack there of.
There have been lots of threads on this, and various people dissing Tom Perkins. Mr Perkins has owned (and does own) many boats that would be considered boat porn by the forum experts including the Herreschoff schooner,, Marriette. He funded Google by the way, and has received the Gareth Hughes "Good Bloke award"

you can put as much lipstick on this Maltese Falcon pig as you want it still wont make the subject of this thread look anything like boat porn. ;)

Man has more money than Croesus (sp?), but he got it all by sticking his investments in some (at the time) really risky things.... Genentec, Google, etc.
Had we been as smart, we might be on the QD of the Falcon ourselves, but ...back to the thread... she is, if nothing else, a damn interesting bit of technology. A million a year to operate her? Sheesh.

That boat would be totally awsome if.... it was built in 1985!

But in the system of international maritime signals, each flag [signal flags—running from bow to stern] represented a letter. Ever the paragon of capitalism, Perkins's playful message spelled out: "Rarely does one have the privilege to witness vulgar ostentation displayed on such a scale."

So the guy has more money than time to spend it in good taste. That's what you get when you outsource the design and decoration of your toys.
How would we have styled her, while using the best of the rig technology? I'd go to a 16th century ship for inspiration, since they had no staysails - all square-rigged except the lateen mizzen.

WOW! Is that ever a beauty! I love seeing monsters this size all decked out with the latest technologies! Every bit as stunning today as say,the Cutty Sark was in her day!Cutting edge all the way. And they really use her and all the systems work....not like some Disney facade.Amazing! Gets me to thinking of some of Bill Gardens larger sailing beauties..............
Nevertheless, I will take my comfy poverty level lifestyle anyday over the constant worries and expenses the Maltese Falcon must engender daily.

Technology only goes so far -- we we're still able to roll the Falcon with the Herreshoff ELEONORA while racing in Palma last spring...........how do you think Tom was feeling that day??http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r178/alangerm/EleonoraFalcon.jpg

"a million a year to run the boat"
bulls**t!!! try 2-3, you know what parking that thing stern-too in the med runs per day?
hats off to Tom,for advancing the science of sailing with that very modern rig, Old Herreshoff was always trying new things and people did not laugh at him, I sailed with him on mariette long ago and had the time of my life....well before sailing eleonora which is a wee bit bigger!

I wasn't suggesting that technology equates with speed, although we often would like to link the two.
"How do you think Tom was feeling that day?" Probably very nostalgic as he slowed the Falcon down to give the crew a chance to admire a real good old classic:)
Keep a good thought!

Saw Perkins (and the MF) hahhahaha, that could be a funny!.... anyway, he was profiled on 60 min. Sunday night. Cool boat. But I agree w/ Joe, it's still not very pretty.

Perkins has had 'Pretty' and boats that many in here would give a right arm just to sail on. Mariette and Atlantide are two of the most stunning boats I have had the pleasure of setting foot on board and watching underway. In my opinion Atlantide was especially so. Such a wonderful little ship. And who can forget that she has the worlds only bugatti boat as a tender (wooden!). If you doubt the man has or had some taste give the two a google.
Maltese falcon on the otherhand was a snowballed project that was purely from Mr Perkins want to do something totally unreal. He had great enthusiasm for the rig design and its merits. Then when he saw the great hulking hull sitting dormant in Perini Navis yard he had the vision of a boat that many didnt think was even close to possible. No messing around on a small scale version, just launch into a 80 meter monster. In its first season it did 20 knots under sail.
It may be ugly but good on perkins for having the vision & following through with such an ambitious project.

I agree on both points. The rig is what the MF is all about - and it works better than anyone seemed to expect. The rest is just silly shiny stuff for the folks who can afford to charter at about $400,000 a week.

The rig is just so amazing. Love the clean lines and projection of power and sail area, but if the technological bits ever jammed.... oooh boy.... no thanks.
The only thing ugly is that butt-ugly radar/navigation light mast at the bow. But ya gotta have what ya gotta have.
