View Full Version : Notify us if the Forum is slow for you

Scot

If the Forum is slow for you, please notify me by clicking that Yield ! triangle icon, upper right, by a thread "post" number.

We did some changes last night and this am, and it would be helpful to know if they made any difference.

Also, please note if it was slow just opening a thread, or when you clicked Submit to post.

Thanks,

Scot

I've lost the thread jump box at the end of thread but the back and foreward buttons at the upper left seem to work so well, even after making a comment like here, that I can get everywhere faster than the old way.

I think that's what you intended.

Thanks

The forum is slow to load any one of the areas - generally the list of areas comes up quickly and then it takes a while to move on to any one of them. It's been that way for about the last 4 hours.

The other thing vBulletin doesn't do correctly is track ones last visit. Today it told me that I had last visited at 7am-ish around 9-ish, 10:30-ish, noon-ish, 4-ish and 6:30-ish.

Clearly to me what slows the forum down most is the database load. I wonder whether there's a way to dump threads as soon as they exceed page 2 on the layer - for instance, to archive each Bilge thread as soon as it hits the bottom of page 2 of the Bilge.

They would still be searchable, at least the ones to which you've contributed are, although not the entire forum at this point, but they wouldn't have to load from memory before the forum could load.

That's my hunch about how vBulletin operates.

Unable to log-on for about 85 minutes from 11:45am till 1:00pm EST.I tried to get on about 0930 or so Pacific Time and couldn't. The browser just hung until it timed out (or came back with "connection reset by peer") :(

Finally tried debugging HTTP the old-fashioned way:
telnet www.woodenboatvb.com HTTPThe web server answered just like you'd expect it to. When I entered an HTTP GET verb, though, I got an odd and non-standard response. Instead of the expected HTTP response with a status of 404 File Not Found, the web server simply came back with a one line response say that 'domain services for this domain have been discontinued'.

I suspect there were some perturbations in the ether :D that appear to have been cleared up.

The following is the message I sent Scot at 11:16am EST. It took from then until now -- 11:37am EST -- to log onto this thread and post. :(

It is now 11:16am EST. The Forum became completely unusable at approx. 10:30am EST.

It has taken from 10:38am to now to 1) log on to the forum, 2) log onto the Bilge, 3) log onto this thread, and 4) access this page to send this message.

I am on a Mac using the Safari web browser. My browser does not time out, it simply takes forever for any page to open.

This seems to be occuring everyday between 10:30 and 11:00am EST. Yesterdday the slowdown continued until around 1:00pm EST.

The forum continues to have various problems, most of them seem to occur at the "contacting http://www.woodenboatvb.com" stage. Sometimes it's the entire forum taking up to a minute to load, sometimes it's a specfic section or message, sometimes it's the posting of a message to a thread.

I'm no longer so certain that the problem is with the database taking so long to load. Beginning to think the problem is with the company running the server.

The forum is just about unusable these days if you have a dial-up connection.

I may be a special case here with dial-up, but in a remote location without switching to satellite that’s it.
Mostly I just give up. Life is too short to sit here in front of a screen waiting for poor software.
It a great forum but checking in daily and waiting for it to get better (and it never really does) is discouraging.

Hi Scot - really slow this morning, at all stages...connecting to WBF, find new posts, pulling up a thread....

If the forum is down due to service, perhaps a message to that effect could pop up so we all know you guys are doing work on the system (e.g. something similar to what I occasionally get with hotmail)? Just an idea...

Wow! Excruciatingly slow tonite. I waited almost 20 minutes (yep. 20. count 'em.) to post a "quick reply" and finally gave up. Waited two hours to try again and now it took about four minutes to switch from the main menu to the Bilge to get to this message.

Starting trying to access the main page at 8:38 pacific (11:38 eastern). Waited three minutes; no luck. Went somewhere else, came back repeatedly, still no luck. Finally got through at 8:48 pm.

I have DSL. There are DOZENS of other sites I access on a regular basis, and there isn't anywhere other than this site that doesn't come up with 10 seconds or so ... and in most cases it's 3 to 5 seconds. (And note also that WB publications comes up quickly ... only the forum is slow.)

Much more often than not, when I try to access the forum, I can't get through. As much as I appreciate the site, I've just about given up on coming here ... too much of a hassle.

WAY too slow most of the time. I find myself giving up on participating, or clicking a link and then walking away so the lack of speed doesn't drive me madder than Mad Mac McMad.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, but whatever WB can do to speed things up would be a great improvement. No problem with losing the few images that people have attached to threads (instead of linking to remote URL's) if that would improve response time.

We've gotta be losing new folks who come, click, and then just go on to other more responsive sites. And I've tried everything I can do to speed up my browser for this site, clearing the cache, changing settings, but no joy on multiple computers at multiple locations...

I just want to make sure you guys at WoodenBoat understand that I and, I am pretty sure, nearly ever single person who uses this forum are enormously appreciative of every thing you're trying to do, and you continue to be committed to doing, to keep this going. We all, surely, realize how much time is involved in this troubleshooting process, how much energy and thought and payroll it is costing to get things back on an even keel and are completely thankful that you're still at it, trying to solve the problem.

Just you wait until Mystic next year! We'll have some sort of trouble dreamed up by then!

Scott and the WBF, hopefully the new machine will be a change for the better ... I was thinking it could be Windows Vista's fault, something due to their erretic security lockouts until I read this thread.

I can normally get to read one thread and make a posting, but that has been all that I've been able to see and do on the WBF lately, without exiting the Forum and returning several hours later.

Good luck with the improvements.

Warren.
