rudder treatment

I am installing a bronze rudder on a runabout and would like suggestions on what to put on it, if anything (same question for the shaft strut too...). Local prop shop says use anti-fouling bottom paint and a zinc. What about epoxy and a zinc? Boat will be used in salt water and trailered. Originally I think it had red lead painted on it. Ideas, recommendations?

The only thing I have read so far is to put a layer of epoxy on it. That is what I will do soon I hope. This unless this discussion is leading me elsewhere. My boat, a Poulsbo, will also spend time in salt water. I mean months at a time.
