Hey everyone thanks for the help. Mr Know it All I am looking for 21 or more feet inboard. I have a little larger family and need the extra room. On the Lyman site I am talking to a man in Michigan about a 23 or 24 footer. He says it needs a couple of boards fixed above the water line. Is this a difficult project or it like the lapstrake used in houses?

This boat needs 3 new portions of strakes above the waterline and some paint. The interior is good and structure appears to be sound. Gray 188. Great Big Lake boat for fishing or cruising.

Does this boat sound reasonable?

We have a 16ft Lyman in great condition, and a 18ft Lapstrake Penn Yan that is of very similar construction.

I have never replaced a plank on either boat, so I don't know how difficult it is. I do know that the are clenche nailed, and it might be a real PITA to get a plank out.

Anyway, you should also look for broken ribs, and pay particular attention to the stem and transom. Most Lyman's are prone to rot in the transom, and they all seem to get it after a few years of sitting around.

We managed to fix a small section of rot in the stem with a dutchman and Micro bubbles, and that was 15 years ago. No problems since.

It is time consuming to replace the decks, but not too difficult.

The engine should be simple to work on, so check compression and oil pressure, but otherwise it should be easy to fix. I don't know much about the transmissions, so I will leave that to others.

Lyman's have been gaining in value, and one in good condition will be worth considerably more than what you are paying. Plus they are a great boat that looks wonderful.

Good luck, and I hope you get it.

I agree with Noah...something more is wrong with this boat, $1,000 is way too cheap.

Sure looks good, though.

Baddawg.....That is an old picture of that boat. I believe Norm Chartland(sp) is selling that boat. He has a few Lymans for sale and I suspect he knows what they are worth. It's been for sale for awhile. That would be a good model for a family though. A 24 footer in good shape usually goes for at least 10 grand. I have a friend who owns a 1960 sleeper model with a Chevy 350. It's an awesome boat. Scarfing joints on lapstrake planking can be a real challenge and I suspect it will need quite a bit of work. Take your time and look around in your area. It will be much cheaper if you can find something local. Besides Lymans you might keep an eye out for Thompsons , Cruiser Inc.'s and other lapstrake type boats. Hang in there and keep us posted.

Hey Guys,

I am looking for a mild project to work on. Any help?

Mr. KIA said look local. The problem is that I live in the land of rednecks who think fiberglass is the savior of boats. Wood is just to build fires. That is why I am searching everywhere for a good quality project. I appreciate the help guys.

I hear ya Baddawg. I looked at a dozen Lyman's within an hours drive of where I live here in Ohio when I was hunting for one to buy. I know how lucky I am to live in the heart of Lyman country. One good thing about the Fiberglass mentality is they let their wood boats go cheap. Don't give up and keep looking. Visit some of the small marinas in your area and let them know what you're looking for and leave your phone number. You could also run an add in the paper. If you get deseperate, take some vacation time and bring your checkbook and I'll help you find one up here with a road worthy trailer. :D
