How much electricity goes to produce I kg of aluminium ? A friend and I were discussing aluminium recycling as a method of energy conservation ,but didn't have specific figures .

Google says 15 KWh. I worked at Anglesey Aluminium smelter once. It's all a huge DC series, when a set of anodes in one pot gets bubbles under it, naturally all the voltage goes to tat pot. We used to get some impressive sparks. We got rid of the bubbles by pushing a long stick under the anodes, it would vaporize and cause the bubble to "avalanche" out.

Thanks Gareth ...I should have Goggled it myself .

That makes my household daily energy consumption the equivalent of about 350 g of refined aluminium .Definitely worth recycling every bit .

One night we were shorthanded, I was given a bicycle and a bundle of "greensticks" they were about 12' long. I road miles and miles in the seering heat that night, it was when I realised I like autonomy.
