In respect of an Irridium Satellite telephone does anyone have any experience with them?

EG How to operate?
costs / minute
Etc

I an due to receive one ''gratis'' http://www.bymnews.com/VBulletin/images/smilies/face5.gif shortly (long story) and would like to be a bit better informed.

It's similar to operating a cellphone, unlike the Globalstar which "thinks" it's in America. Iridium thinks it's in Iridiumland and needs an international code for wherever you dial.

Coverage is unbelievable, I've always had someone else pay the bills. The minimum package is affordable.

They (sensibly) are not compatible with Mac's for downloads.

Considering I just got a $100 bill from AT&T for about 20 minutes of phone call to Tobago, I think a Sat. phone might be reasonable.....Hell a 15 minute call to Shane in Australia only cost $44..... Damned theives.... (Mutter mutter, grumble)

I use (as you know) www.onesuite.com 22 cents a minute to Tobago and 2.9 cents a minute to Ausiland (I don't have "long distance")

After much research, consideration, and lots of $$$s, we never mastered ours. I think we got a few out-going calls placed, but never managed to take a call or check what it told us were voice mail that we had.

It was actually kinda comical when the phone says call 123456 to check new voice mail message, and then when you call 123456 it says the service isn't activated please call 987654321 and when you call 9876564321 it says calls the equilivant of "this call cannot be placed from this phone" :D

I think it's Iridium for "we screwed you out of a thousand dollars, have a nice day." :D:D:rolleyes:

More than once 40ish miles offshore we'd be in the cockpit with everyone trying their hand at the Iridium phone and one or the other of us would actually have service on their cell phone.
