A new Insurgent Weapon

Saw this on last night's news. It's a new, Russian made, armour-piercing hand grenade. It packs such a wallop the thrower needs something like a masonry barrier to keep from being killed in the process.
It looks like the old German "potatoe masher" of the world wars. To get the maximum out of it the grenade must come down with the stick pointing upward. This is accomplished by a small parachute that deploys while the grenade is in the air. The 'chute, of course, limits the amount of horizontal travel so the attacker must get close to hit the target.
Instructional videos, that were gotten off the internet, show several attacks. Unprotected attackers got about one stride into their retreat when the blast knocked them flat. But, if the attacker is conceald by a wall or fence close to the road he need only dump the bomb over the top. There is no time for defensive manuevers and the attacker survives if the blast doesn't give him a concussion.
If what the videos show is true this grenade beats burying an IED all to hell. Attackers need only stand along the street in an urban area where our troops are known to pass.
A squad of crazies with an ample supply of these things could probably cut big hole in a brigade size unit.

Let's see,, Iraq, oil drilling, had a military, made stuff, had universities,,even had indoor plumbing and the capability to threaten the US with WMD, or could have wmd,maybe,,just maybe there's someone in those few hundred thousand Iraqi military that were left would could fabricate explosives into a shape that would make a shaped charge explosive.

nothing like the Discovery Channel. One wonders,,,there might be a few munitions experts in Iraq, maybe, they probably don't have to wait around for the Discovery Channel to explain it. Maybe these grenades did come from Russia like the copper bowls for making the EFP came from Iran (machining copper must be a Persian skill) and the 100tons of explosives from AlQaqaa are sitting around unused.

hmm,,or they are running out of them and this is a way to trade the time and labor expenditure of IEDs with more lethal urban weapons. Easier to disguise than RPG gun.

google away,,it's some multiple of the diameter. If you look at the youtube clips there's a stand-off distance of a couple diameters. The Discovery channel clip looks like 2-3oz of c-4 that put a hole through 2' of steel and 18" of dirt. If you eliminate the need for a metal casing and shrapnel it could be lighter than a regular grenade. Look at the websites describing the anti-material/personel cluster munitions we use. Some about the size of a v-8 can and can put a hole through 4" of steel.

I'm not going to start posting simple improvised munitions here (Chemist asked me not to so many years back), but that is fifth grade explosives 101, and copper/brass work is a beginning local trade.....gunpowder is a local trade, and a version of C4 can be made in the kitchen, or bathtub from locally available materials.....
