I sanded and bleached the bottom sides of my scow and then stained them. I wish I had choosen a softer stain. For some reason not all of the wood bleached. It had spots on it mostly where the sander went in a little deeper. Now those few areas that did bleach white are a deep red. Looks like spilled paint

If you haven't varnished yet have you tried re-bleaching?

I haven't put on the clear coat of epoxy yet but I plan to tomorrow. I think their is a coat of something over the cedar that I hadn't, for the most part, gone all of the way through after sanding the white enamel off. I am afraid to sand more lest I go all of the way through the veneer. I don't know how thick it is. I suppose that I could get some really fine sand paper and spend a number of more hours on it but I have a long way to go yet, canvasing, trim work, replacing hardware, trailer work. I am looking forward to sailing. The big red blotches kind of give it character. I guess :(

If it makes you feel any better, wood - esp. one like cedar - is not susposed to be monochrome. Sometimes when I find myself getting too carried away - see the other post going on staining/varnishing - I just have to keep telling myself -
"Wood is not susposed to be monochrome, wood is not susposed to be monochrome..."

Also, in previously posts it was unanamiously determined that the fish don't care!

Enjoy!

You probably didn't do a thorough job of stripping the old finish. It sounds as if you're talking about plywood. If I were you, I'd consider using paint instead of stain.

I'll bet your right scott. It's probably plywood. I think what I am going to do is paint everything with the exeption of two thin boards on either side, like racing stripes. I'll tape them off. The red spots, if you notice, are part of the modestly revealed layers of her inner grain. Every thing else-pure and white.
