All this recent activity on Sq metre boats caused me to take a detour on friday to check on progress on the one being worked on here in Auckland.
Vivi, a 30 sq m was shipped out here by it's english owner last year for restoration/ rebuilding by Peter Brookes.
Peter is one of the clearest thinkers I have had the priveledge to meet and does some seriously wonderful work.

The stage she is at now ,is a nearly completed hull with some floors and beam shelf to go in before decking commences. She's had a new counter and bow but has retained about 2/3 of her original mahogany planking. New planking is Sapele( african mahogany) with laminated iroko frames replacing the original iron ones and floors in iroko as well. Ribs are steamed American white oak .

WOW! What a job he has done - bloody outstanding! Interesting to look at the differences between Vivi and the one that I am trying to get my hands on - Vivi has much less freeboard, and looks like she would be a pretty wet boat. Do you know designer and build date at all?

She's a Tore Holm from 1923 and she's 43 ft long CJ.
Long for such an early boat I would think.

Oh hardly, Rich. The work you've done on that 22 is legendary. Don't forget ,Peter is a professional boat builder working pretty well full time on this boat now. If you have read any Classic Boat magazines you may have come across articles on him and the 6 metre he owned in England, ASTI V. He virtually rebuilt a class too. The West Solents.... keel boats of about 34 ft . Ian Wright knows him from Heybridge basin.
Peter has asked me to go back in a month to take some more pics for the owner so I'll update again then.

I'd been saving this post until I had some spare drooling time. Still don't (and some of the pictures are missing), but geeze those are pretty boats.
If and when we finish this project, a meter boat is the only AND I REPEAT ONLY project I'd consider.
Ok, maybe another Concordia... or something small with nice lines... or maybe some sad lady in need of rescuing...
 'Tis a sickness I guess

I've been on Linnet a few times over the years Martin, but She's not a boat I've seen out and about a great deal. She's much smaller than your boat. I don't know accurately how long she is but my recollection is about 20 ft but quite a small 20 ft. Narrow. She's circa 1910 or so. built by Baileys, same family that designed Waione. she had a major restoration in the early to mid 80's by the Robertson family. She lives north of Auckland somewhere now I understand.

Peter has secured a job to build a Bristol Channel pilot cutter. A 50 footer to be built traditionally. Of kauri. I'm surprised it can be got but it's on order.

The Kauri. I think it's old felled stuff that wasn't taken out because it was too hard or plain just impossible 100 years ago.
An interesting comment was made to me by a demolition timber man. I suggested that another local timber ( used a lot in furniture and houses) called RIMU was less valuable than Kauri. He said that yes it was, but it was relatively expensive because when there were 2 old felled trees in a forest, the Rimu would have rotted and the Kauri would be perfect. Therefore the less valuable timber intrinsically was getting harder to find and was becoming more valuable.

Chris has a post on this subject as well but a job like this can't have enough profile so in the interests of 'completion' I'm putting it here too.

Thanks John, I am glad that you are there to post photos like these. A beautiful boat, no?
Those stern sections sure are shallow. I can't see them fitting runners too far aft on this boat, but what the hell, it looks just gorgeous.
Cheers,
Good Grief! Look at the shine on that hull. What shame to put it in the water. I would like to just stroke it a little.

Do they have runners ? the boom is so short I'm sure it won't be a problem .

Of kauri. I'm surprised it can be got but it's on order. How much difference is there between the Kiwi Kauri and the Kauri from Queensland? I've seen plenty of the trees in NZ when I lived there (just love that big square one up north) but have never seen the Aussie trees standing.
I've sourced heaps (well a couple of cubic metres) of the Queensland Kauri for Grantala's rebuild, having been told that it was hard to get.

Sparked my curiosity to get on to Google
South Queensland Kauri: Scientific Name: Agathis robusta. Closely allied to Queensland Kauri (Agathis palmerstonii)
NZ Kauri: Scientific name: Agathis Australis
Has anyone worked with all three?

I've never really been interested in race rule inspired sailboats. But, I have to admit that the thought of daysailing that boat brings tears to my eyes. I can't wait to see on the water pics.
Thanks for the photos,
Paul
