View Full Version : Taking up residency.
S.V. Airlie

Well, 72 days and counting.. Seventy two days since the initial launch date given to me in April. Am about to file for residency.
Yes, she is in the water but there is a lot of small ( loosely worded ) things to do.
As it stands, have reached the end of my rope and the knot is not holding at the end. Have scheduled transport for Airlie on or about Aug. 23rd. Any work not done by then won't be done in NS. Enough is enough.
Also, due to the lateness ( I hear " back to school sales ads everyday ), am looking at transport to either the Portland area or Portsmouth NH. Same price.
cheers

Good luck with getting things wrapped up.
Jamie, I am so sorry that you have had this uncomfortable experience at Heiseler's. I am utterly surprised that it has happened - Heiseler's was known locally for occasionally adding tasks (and costs) to a storage/fit out job (but always tasks that were necessary), but were never, to my knowledge, more than a few days late on a rebuild/refit project. I am at a loss. I wish that you had had the opportunity to have experienced Heiseler's pre-new owner, or had had the work done at Stevens' Boat Shop, or Billy Lutwick's, or...
I sure do hope that Airlie treats you like a king when you are finally away.

jamie,
I'm sorry to here this...
you know, Yanks in Tuckahoe, NJ and Gregg neck in Galena, MD are cheap wooden boat friendly yards down here.

Let us know where and when you'll be relaunching down this way. I imagine you'll get company. ;)

I remember way back when you told us here about your delusion, er, I mean "plan" to get this danged ole wood boat fixed up and sailing by spring.
Right then I began hardening myself against the inevitable day when your dream would seem to turn into a nightmare and then to drizzly shyte right before our eyes.
Having hadened myself(and having seen Lefty's eagerness to bet whiskey and money that your schedule was "flawed") I'm in good shape to encourage you to cheer up and continue the journey.
Congratulations for being tough and tolerant and persistent in the face of all adversity, delays, frustration, etc.
Despite your personal experience with this project it has been extremely fun and inspirational for most of us watching it happen.
It's almost done! Best wishes!

I have faith in ya, Jamie.
now, would you pitch some of that lead over the side and replace it with Propellor Porter for your trip up to the desperate dessicated denizens of Mid-Coast Maine?;)
ye'll be needin a cargo to make it pay, anyways, and I know you have a head for history! Just think of how the Kennedys made their pile!:D

Jamie,
How about launching at Brooklin Boatyard on the 25th for the conclusion of the SRR? So sorry to read of your travails. Next year this time they'll just be a bad dream.

Update:
This is where everything stands... Masts were supposed to be put in today ( also last Friday but ya know how that went.) So, not t0oday supposedly tomorrow. Right!
Okay shipping.. seems I( have verbally the same price to ship her to Portland or Portsmouth NH. Am thinking about NH as is is further south west.
Have not mentioned any other spots on the coast but accessibility may be an issue.
Anyway, this Russian-Scot is about at the end o9f hisd teather.

It may be taking forever, but at least your boat is in water.
You beat me by months (many, many months).

Jamie, how high are your masts above WL?

Jamie - masts in, then out for shipping? Need to be in in the first place?

Ken...Without actual measurements I am thinking 35' and 48' respectively. Now am not sure about he marina in Portsmouth.. omething like Great Bay Marina that can handle Airlie.. Not sure.. you probably know it.

Great Bay Marine it is. The bridge to go under has 48 ft clearance + a 8 ft tide range.

A few days sailing around protected Casco Bay on more shakedown may be easier than doing so in the Piscataqua River (extremely strong currents) and offshore from Portsmouth. It's only a days sail from Portland to Portsmouth on a NW wind, so would you be saving that much 'southing'? Hamilton Marine and Portland Yacht Service are handy and within walking distance. Also no bridge to manage.

The timing's not great for us. We'll be up in Brooklin for the Small Reach Regatta from the 23rd 'til the 26th. Why not Brooklin Boatyard? Closer to Canada, eh?

Jamie;
I'm saddened to hear this is ending/beginning on a sour note for you.At this point your plan to be done with the yard here is probably the best option.
Who is hauling Arilie to "The States" for you?
Fair winds, although I only saw you for that one brief moment at Bill's you are welcome anytime.
Take care and better luck to come;
Earl

Jamie,
BBY would allow a couple of WBF friends to be present for Airlie's US launching. How about it? Think about how nice a shakedown cruise around Deer Isle would be. Classic Schooner country.

Jamie, I know you are most anxious to leave Canada with your boat. I assume you have been having a knowledgeable and independent person monitor the progress of rebuilding. If there has not been an independent inspector, get one now before business is concluded and you leave the country. If this is not done, it may well be that your troubles are just starting.

Go Jamie !!!
Don't give up the ship me lad:p Sometimes the race goes to the determined!!
You were a fool if you thought that this endeavor would be easy. You have intertwined your destiny with a grand historic boat and as we Yanks say, 'In for a dime, In for a dollar'...
So pull up yer trousers, wipe the sweat off yer brow, and face off against 'PHASE TWO', wherein you are just that much closer to the prize...And remember, when you get there, you will have a legendary experience to crow about, as you round the horn ;););)
Be strong!

Jamie, I'm halfway between Portsmouth and Portland. Here is yet another helping hand proffered. You seem to be adept at ignoring them all.
I also think you've achieved wonders, step back and count your blessings.

Jamie?
You could do worse than taking out residency. Just saying.
Sorry for your troubles with the Airlie rebuild. Chin up.

Okay.. Hope to have Airlie shipped this week. Shipper is getting very busy and no set date yet.
Two possible destinations: Portland or Portsmouth..Still need some finishing work done.. So have to check with the yards in those areas and schedule accordingly. I have no problems with either one.
So, that's it...to date..

Great news, Jamie! :) :D
And a gentle encouragement that projects like these rarely get done on time. Don't get me started!
As someone said, take a deep breath, step back and count the blessings, of which you have many. ;) :)
