Hi all

Advice please - I'm having my yacht "Rocquette" restored and am in current discussions with the yard on how best to repair damage to laminated frames. http://www.yacht.ro/frame.php?lang=en&linc=race is where you can follow the exciting progress!

Particularly, there is rot in the aftmost frames above the garboard in the deepest part of the keel. A number of frames will require repairs. Can anyone see any issues with scarfing in laminated replacement bottom sections (with a suitable ratio - probably 1:12) given this is an area with a lot of curvature? Please ask for clarification if the above is as clear as mud...

Incidentally all floors (the original 1964 galvanised iron - for which read rust!) are being replaced with with either bronze or laminated wooden ones (tbc) so there is an integrated piece of work here to beef up the area.

The hood ends are often the first place to go. The area where they land may also be a problem though, oddly enough, I've see sound keels with the rot confined to the frames only.

Anyway, I see nothing wrong with scarfing in a new lower portion providing you can make a truely good scarf. On a curve, this is very hard to make and fit.

Doing it myself, I'd be inclined to make the frame of quite a few laminations with the bevel for each layer a bit further up the frame than the one before.

Real pros can loft each frame end, make it inside, and have it fit perfectly right off, but not me.

Very nice boat and worthy project.

having scarfed 63 laminated frames frecently, from the keel up I see no problems PROVIDING acess is available and that will mean removal of the garboard plank and anything else in the way. In my case that meant the engine and cockpit floor and funiture. Ahh boating, what fun!!
