Termites will eat the wood out from under paint. They are strange little beasties. I have seen three 2x10 joists nailed together and the termites distroyed the center one and left the others untouched. They will eat the paper off sheetrock and leave the paint intact, it just looks blistered. If they find a way past the barrier they are home free.

Neither will copper napthanate.

Copper and lead are mildewcides...the only thing that deters termites is a good soaking in Chlordane or Creosote....both now banned...and not always Creosote.

Pentachloraphenol is the best if you can avoid the feds and epa and all of those others that use cancer as a scare word. Termites just don't seem to like some types of wood even from the same species.

Gets some sloths. They love termites, and avidly hunt them. Just ask those nature show guys like Marty Stouffer.

The best way to stop termites with red lead is to squash them with the can. Long job though. And messy. smile.gif

HFHal, We try ! we really try. Sometimes we are very trying!
Anyhow detering termites is a multi-billion dollar world wide effort that hasn't been much more effective than the war on terrorists. :(
