I have a set of plans for a 18'.8' Mackinaw sailboat and it has several unknown (at least to me) notations of stock size to be used:

for example: Floors. W. Oak S. 1" M. 4 1/2" .. I understand the Floor and W.oak, but what does the S. and M. indicate? Measuring, with an architect's scale, from the plans shows the width of the floor to be 1" and the maximum height to be 4.5" .

Until someone comes along to correct me.....

I believe that W. Oak S. 1" M. 4 1/2" translates to "White Oak, sided 1 inch, molded 4 1/2 inches". The sided dimension is analagous to "fore-aft", the molded is "up-down" (maybe).

*** edit *** or what norm said on your other thread!

Just curious, are you planning on building this boat? I've recently sailed on the Mackinaw Ketch at the Wooden Boat School.
