I am going to Belmullet, Mayo in the west of Ireland for a month. Any formites in the area? Will spend a lot of time on boats fishing for crabs and lobster and crayfish. Will try to get down to Dublin to see the Viking ship. What else should I try to see?

You could swing by Gubby Williams place and see if he's finished drawing up building plans for the Heir Island Sloop yet.;)

Actually, my fondest memories of Ireland frequently conjure up images of some of the best pubs you could hope for. Galway was of particular note. Clifden (Connemara Co.) was beautiful in most every way. Cheers.

You will have a great time. I have lived and worked in the Republic for half a year each for 7 years now. Wonderful country, wonderful people. Bring an open mind, an enjoyment of excellent pints and a sense of humor. I must warn you that Ireland has become one of the most expensive countries in Europe over the past few years. Enjoy yourself. Cheers.

Thanks for the idea's, the pubs sound good. Have not been to Heir Is. Will look it up. I have been over there about 5 times in the last 30 years and not been very far from the wife's home.. Her dad will be 100 on the 19th of August.

If you get down to the southwest this is Bantry Bay:

And you should go to the marina in Schull to learn about coming alongside tidily:

Be sure to bring your rain gear.
It has rained every day here since 11th June. Not all day, but every day (although we haven't got it as bad as some parts of England).
If you get a chance, go to either Kerry of Donegal for the scenery. Also get to Cork for the Titanic and Lusitania museum in Cobh.

There is an interesting heritage centre in Co. Mayo

I think they were the earliest settlers in Ireland. A fabulous pyramid with turf sides and a glass observation deck on top.
And if you are near Cork, give me a shout and we can meet up for a pint of Murphys. PM me if you are interested and I can give you my mobile no.
By the way, are you anywhere near Mordialloc? My brother and family live there.

I have been to The Céide Fields on my last trip 2 years ago. Thanks for the offer of a drink Fintan. Not sure what time or transport I will have yet. I should have access to a computer in Belmullet when I can get in there. I have seen it rain there. Its good at that. This is the house that I will be staying in.http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1095/875890210_e698371abb.jpg

Yes Mordie is only 50 kilometers away. I fish for squid and garfish there and launch my Simmons in the Creek.http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1200/899329063_fca1a7aa9c_o.jpghttp://farm2.static.flickr.com/1139/899329243_121ebc4e21.jpg

Well thanks for bringing the good weather with you!
Two days on the trot without rain, we won't know ourselves.
Anyway, the offer still stands, if you're down my way give me a shout. I've PM'ed you the mobile number.

Thanks Fintan but I see no change to get away from the Family at the moment. Not complaning. Great and generous mob. I had a crab omlet for breakfast. 2 eggs and at least a pound of crab. I went out to Innishkea the day before to help with the shearing of sheep. Lovely coast. Went out in my brother inlaws 40ft wooden boat.
