It is a known fact that nobody who wrote a term paper about the novels of Edith Wharton has ever committed an act of terrorism. Anyone who can write 3,000 words deconstructing "The House of Mirth" and find the subtexts and the overtones of Sylvia Plath, the Beach Boys' "Fun, Fun, Fun," the journals of Meriwether Lewis, and MySpace, has done enough violence and lost his appetite for terror.

I love that guy. Listen to him every weekend on NPR. So my wonderful wife bought us VIP tickets to his recent show at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. Great tickets! And I do mean GREAT - second row center with a cocktail party after the show to meet him and chat.
Small Problem - his voice is like chloroform for my bride. She was snoozing second row center in two minutes. He didn’t say anything during the show but did greet her at the reception, “Ah you’re awake! I thought we’d lost you.”

For some reason my wife finds him tiresome, too! Can't understand why.
The first time I ever heard him I was sailing from Maine to Cape Cod with my sister. I was awed by his storytelling. It was about problems his height gave him when he was a teenager.
His absolutely best story was about the 1936 Chevvy cess pool and the senior parade.
It's been all downhill since then.
