I've heard some clips of FDR and Churchill lately. They came to power as the microphone was changing. Listening to Roosevelt's speech before the '32 convention is revelatory. He's still on the podium pumping. He had to in the idea he had to be heard to the back of the hall, yet the microphone was there and his speech seems brash to modern ears.

I hear uncle Adolf was a master of the crowd, the pre-microphone oratory. He had them eating out of his hand. I imagine John Kennedy on that cold stage exhorting us to ask not what our country can do for us. He was still shouting to the back row.

Now, it's youtube. Just musing on how in my lifetime it's all changed.

Hey Paul, how was the drive? How far did you make it? We had storms passing through all day.

We didn't make it very far... we took the southern route in the interest of putting a few miles behind us today, but traffic was unbelievable, we're stopped for the night in western Massechusetts. Lots of interminttent rain today on the road too.
