Dear Sirs,

Can I use SS fasteners for bronze tangs, masthead,
and other bronze stuff on deck? Unfortunately I could not find bronze fasteners here in Turkey.
Thanks in advance for your guidance,
Regards

Dear Cenk,

I would assume that the concern for using SS screws would be galvanic corrosion although I'm not sure if that is a valid concern with these two materials. I have ordered many of my screws online from McFeeleys which has a broad selection of square drive screws.

http://www.mcfeelys.com/html/materials.html

Is it possible to order these via Turkey? If not, perhaps I could arrange to send you what you need - It doesn't sound like you need thousands and thousands of them.

I know this is not the right forum for this but I just wanted to say that the recent tensions between our two contries (US and Turkey) are sad and worrysome. I would expect that there is a great deal of anti-American sentiment in Turkey right now which I guess I can understand. For my part, I can only hope and pray for peace as soon as humanly possible.

I wish you success with your boat.

Dave

Stainless and bronze is a pretty common combination, although there are some grades of stainless that are better than others.

Stainless and bronze above the waterline should be fine. Bronze screws would be better, but having lived in Turkey in the Channakale (sp?)area, near the ruins of Troy, I can sympathize with your difficulty in getting imported things

Good Luck

I would like to thank all for the advises and the lead on Mcfeelys where I will order my bronze screws. As for the SS bolts on bronze above the water line I took it fm your advises that galvanic corrosion is not a concern, therefore will do so.

Dear Dave, in reality there is no any anti-american sentiment in Turkey but only a worry because of the uncertainity of the near future in the area. Majority of the turkish people, including myself, sincerely share the same hope and pray as yours.

P.S. I will keep you posted with the photos of my newbuilding, which is Alden's Malabar X.
With kind regards,
Cenk.

Dear Cenk,

Thank you for your kind message. Would you have any interest in exchanging email addresses? I am quite curious to learn more about Turkey as I am inexcusably ignorant of your country and culture. My email is dave.franchino@design-concepts.com . If you would prefer not I certainly understand.

Thank you,

Dave

Hello Cenk....
Last year I was in Istanbul....There is a small shop near the yacht harbor that had a variety of MONEL fasteners at a reasonable price. It was a small shop about 5 meters wide storefront. I do not remember the name as I was just wandering around the area poking my nose here and there. Good luck with your project...

Hello CENK GURAKAN and Davef

I also, would be interested in discussing the culture of Turkey if you so are inclined to share your experiences and such. Who knows? Perhaps, some day I can Sail Audax to the Meditterranean and "pop" in for tea. ;)

A question for Dave:
Does your company use the design program MicroStation V8 produced by Bentley? I ask because I am currently enrolled at the University of Maine, and taking a class in it.

Cenk.Don't know if its relevent to the topic but so far as I know galvanic corrosion with bronze is mostly a problem with galvanized steel fasteners. Its the zinc coating that corrodes in contact with bronze, leaving exposed the usually less than stainless steel underneath, which begins to rust in contact with water.

Ralph,

No, our company does not use Microstation. From what I understand, Microstation is predomenantly intended for Civil engineers and as such is more directly compatible with tasks done by AutoCad (quasi-2D work, although I know much Civil work is now in the 3D rhelm). Our company (www.design-concepts) specializes in product design including medical devices, consumer products, etc. Our mechanical engineers generally us one of two packages; Pro/E from PTC or Solidworks. We also run SDRC IDEAS and Unigraphics as well, although on a smaller scale. For what it's worth, I designed my boat in Pro/E as it has pretty good complex surfacing capabilities. I think Pro/E has a nautical design module which will do prismatic coefficients, block coefficients, etc, but since we don't have that module I did all that manually.

If I was interested in mechancial product design and wanted to learn a single parametric Solid Modeling package, I would learn SolidWorks which is less expensive, eaiser to use and has pretty good functionality. Within my industry for mechancial design, SolidWorks is rapidly becoming a defacto standard.

Good luck to you.

Dave
