View Full Version : Camp Sailing with Tess and her friend

Tomorrow night Tess, her friend, and myself are planing to camp sail on Tidbit. I'm figuring we would sail a short distance up to to this little cove and beach.

Anchor off, Thinking of throwing a stern anchor and tying the bow to a tree on shore just to be safe. They can play in the surf and get tired. I can make a little camp fire on the beach and we can make smores. Other than that I'm out of ideas. What should I bring or do to make this little trip more enjoyable for the girls.
I have sleeping bags a mess kit and a camp stove, some flashlights an oil lantern, blankets, towels, a little cooler, TP & the bucket ;) first aid kit What else do ya need?
Thanks
Joe

My sibs and I always recall Dad's endless Hyderack stories - tales of a boy and the dog he found so skinny with bones sticking out that he looked like a hide on a rack and nursed back to health to become better than Rin Tin Tin and Lassie together. We never had an engine and the Dead Sea (aka Long Island Sound) is often windless in the evening, so getting home after a beach cookout involved Dad paddling for a few miles, the bioluminesence exploding and glowing at each stroke as the Boy - never had a name - and Hyderack outwitted outlaws, pumas, snow storms and fires.
So, tell stories.

Maybe a little treasure (time capsule) to bury, map making supplies and a shovel. Of course there would have to be a suitable oath of secrecy. Guaranteed to make a lasting memory.

Thats why I selected this cove its actually closer than where I usually moor off of Garrison. ;)
Jim definetly some OFF™ will be onboard.

A very simple card game - UNO works extremely well with my two (5 and 12).
Another vote for bug repellent and simple first aid kit.
One more towel than you could possibly need (water + children = ;) )
Plenty of snack food - little tummies get empty fast.
Be sure to have the sort of hot drink that they like (cocoa, whatever)

I believe there are people in the States who mess about in boats with their children who don't know the Swallows and Amazons books; this may help:

Hand Sanitizer, Aloe Vera ointment, a list of known allergies, extra pairs of dry socks and under wear. Take some glow sticks, kids love them.

I'll second (or third) Swallows and Amazons (and start with that one!) since I'm constantly amazed that anyone, anywhere, doesn't know those - great books about kids having fun with boats, camping, and taking responsibility for themselves (within limits).
Maybe an easy 'fancy rope work' project? When I was a kid my Dad got a copy of 'how to make a rope mat' and we all had fun making a small mat to put beside the bed - only takes an hour or two for the simple ones, you learn something, and you get something to carry home. Fun stuff.

They'll LOVE that...Take several treasures to bury, at the top of the ridge/cliff, the mysterious cave, sandy beach, Pirates cove, etc....And don't forget to put a message in a bottle with a map, and instructions to call you if they find a treasure...In 5 years!

Our girls and their friends used to braid those cloth ankle bracelets for themselves on cruises... like these http://www.lindahendrickson.com/andrew-louie.htm
I'd overhear them reliving the cruise months later while fingering the bracelets. It seemed like a summer thing, and they'd sometimes have several ones on each ankle by the end of summer.
Don't know if kids do that anymore.

maybe a fire permit, or at least research the rules for the area you'll be in. If they don't allow open fires, at least you'll want to know that so you can be a bit more sly in how you build it.
Ghost stories always worked for me, or maybe a book of stories related to the Hudson River, and how it factored into the Revolutionary (or other) war. You could talk about the chain(s) they had/have across the river around Westpoint (IIRC) to stop enemy ships. Something historical about where you're at would be pretty cool, since they would have a much better appreciation of it by actually being right there.
Maybe a telescope if you can borrow one from somewhere, the stars should be nice. A sextant? Fishing pole or two? Your harmonica?
Looks like Tess is fine with sleeping on the boat, but what if the friend gets a bit seasick? That is where a tarp or tent to setup on the beach could come in handy.
I liked the string bracelet idea, I bet they would enjoy that, or, you can teach them knots. Have fun!

OK, So I'm almost all set for tonight. We are going to have a PIRATE theme camp out. We are taking Backfins advice and I have printed up maps and we will write little treasure maps and burry trinkets, and tell sea stories. Tess will put her email on the note so if anyone should find the burryed tresure or the messages in the bottles they can get in contact with her. We will be camping on Little Stony Point Its a cool little point on the Hudson perfect for this kind of adventure. There are trails and cliffs a sandy beach and even a cool old CAVE
Anyone walking along the main trail should also be sure to visit "the cave," part of the old quarry that existed on the site. Like something out of Tom Sawyer, the cave is cut through the rock in the side of the hill and extends roughly 25 yards in. It’s dark, it’s cold, and if you ask any kid who has ventured inside, they’ll tell you it’s really cool.

That is what I would like to do with my beautiful grand daughters when I build my boat. At first I thught you were sending your grand daughter to a summer camp where she learns to sail. That would be a wonderful idea also. When my grand daughters return from camp they can then teach their grandpa how to sail like the wind in the boat that he built! How old is your grand daughter?

Yea its an amazing little efficient lantern way better than any battery operated lantern.
Michael, its a little point about a mile north of Cold Spring. Its just close enough to make it home should one of the girls not be able to handle the entire night on aboard.
