IIRC from when I did some investigations, the amount of gas required to cremate someone was about $10 (mid 80's prices - so call it $40 now) - and once the furnace was up to temp - I seem to recall something about 900 degrees C - it was pretty much self sustaining until shut down. The energy is not used - and clearly there is a lot of it. It was a fairly confronting sight the first time I ever looked into a furnace that was in operation. Methinks a lot of community attitude adjustment would be needed.

Interesting that back in those days the US and Australia were pretty much the opposite when it came to cremation / burial percentages. It was about 70% cremation here - Japan being the leading nation at about 97% IIRC. I'm sure the percentage has crept up here - but it seems that small electric furnaces are coming into play.
