Oh yeah, when they first ran that, my dad was like, "Impossible. You look at the daily miles for the Tour de France." He couldn't believe it. I think the time for a solo rider was a little more than a week back then, in later years they broke a week on a tandem. Hell it takes me typically 5 days to drive the same distance in my CAR. RAAM is an exercise in sleep deprivation. No rules there, you sleep when you want, if you want.

Years back I stayed in the US and drove cars from East to West.
That time when I drove through Monument Valley I noticed a slow moving van with huge speakers on top disturbing the solemn nature.
Behind the van was a chap on a bike participating in the RAAM slowly moving through the desert.

One of my good friends still holds the record for women's 50 year old category RAAM. She set the record years ago (middle 90's maybe). She is quite a gal! Her whole family is, I think, insane. Her husband goes on epic runs and rides, they've done the leadvill 100 many times. Her son has run accross america, just for the fun of it. Yep, they're insane. She now has become a rower in these last several years. They are great folks!
Ultimately, I think her back and neck have paid the price over the years.....
