if you were going to have a boat designed and built, who would you have design it?

Ian Howlett? Juliane Hempel? Doug Petersen? One of the Swedes? Bruce Kirby? Just yesterday we saw new postings about the launch of a new Hempel-designed 8mR in the UK and a project by Brion Rieff to design and build a new 6mR in Maine. I guess that your options are unlimited.

Who would you talk to? Well, I don't know who I'd have design the boat but I do know one guy I'd like to talk to about it: Bob Perry. Now I know that he is not a 'metre boat' guy, but that just means he hasn't designed one as of yet. I have never seen a Perry design that I didn't see a lot of virtue in. I bet he'd have some really good ideas.

Just about every metre class boat in North America is either restored or undergoing restoration. There is a market for this stuff. Isn't that great to see? Ah well. Something to dream about on a hot summer's night.

Now, there's a tough one. Let's see... if not Michael (I know he's very busy) then...

Britt Chance? (As long as he doesn't throw another Mariner at me...)
Nelson/Marek?

Bruce Farr?

I already have a Bruce Kirby 8... So I guess it would be nice to try something new.

What I really like is the Pleione (8 USA-38) idea. Classic topsides, modern below. The one thing I wish were different about my 8 is that it's modern (in the 1983 sense) when I really prefer the classics.

Luders... if he were still around. I loved the lines he'd come up with.

of a new 6mR in Yachting World and saw what the new boats by Juan K and Brion Rieff might just look like. Slab sided with a knuckle bow and a long scoop of a stern. Basically just what you saw when the America's Cup was going on. Along the lines of the RC44 class? Not really what I would call an aesthetically pleasing look but maybe it would grow on you?

I have enjoyed the media coverage of the 6mR's and 8mR's this summer. Maybe they should have a centennial celebration every year :)?

I wonder how a Bruce King or Bob Stephens would handle the rule?

I guess I should have read this post before asking the question on the previous one.

who designed the most consistantly beautiful boats used primarily for racing?

After spending thousands of hours looking at different designs here on the internet I would have to say that Knud Reimers would be my choice. Of course, there will be as many choices as there are answers, but Reimers wins out for me because of the boats that I enjoy just sitting and looking at. Johan Anker would be my second choice, and I suppose that Olin Stephens would be my third.

What about you?

Bill Luders... I think, without question, Bill Luders...
