As Im now about 12 months from getting seriously into some boatbuilding... (oh dont worry Ive started just not gotten SERIOUS yet is all... have to build a new house first... She has decided a kit home is the way to go... meaning "build the buggar yourself Shane" so anyways I thought Id while away some free time before it becomes a rarity by starting a "give us a gander at yer shed" thread
So to kick it off here is a wander through of Dingo's Cave at Dingo Creek West Aussie... 9mtrs x 6mtrs is just way way too small eh?

This shed is becoming the timber storage as soon as the new house is up and Ive demolished this present on it morphs into another shed... so for now its me tool shed... all in about 12 months HOPEFULLY
Anyways... Give us a gander at yer shed!!

My "shop" in it's entirety consists of a 12 by 25 foot platform built from second use lumber found on Craigslist, topped with a $200 Costco carport. Warmth supplied by a propane powered Mr. Heater. Electricity via extension cord.
From the back deck ... Probably the best feature of working like this is that when it's time to sweep up, I just push all the shavings, saw dust, etc, right off the platform into the boat rubbish pile behind the tent. (I should really get a photo of that. Giant pile of cut-offs. The neighbors love me, I'm sure.)

In the photo below, note the world's smallest jointer in the background.
I'm on the left. My neighbor Pete is in the background. On the right is Eric Hvalsoe. I took a lapstrake boatbuilding class from him a couple of years ago at the Center for Wooden Boats. Great class.
He came by the house to help me install the rails on my peapod. (Now, you oughta see his shop. That's a good show.)

This machine John? That's a wide belt sander, a pretty handy machine. Pictured in front are the belts it runs. It'll open up to 8" high and flatten anything up to 42" wide and as long as you like. Entire doors, table tops, drawers, teak grates, laminated stems, laminated anything you like, run it through.
I was really tempted to put that rudder through, but got talked out of it. Would've been cool though, had it worked.

Nice:cool:
funny,'teak grates' reminds me, I have this joke going with the boatbuilders out at Rainbow and Rawhiti. The rainbow guys are saying I'm just out there to pick their brains' shsssh don't let him in on the secrets'( big grins of course).
I asked Paul if they'd thickness some teak for me to make a grate , then I had this joke with Pete out at Rawhiti
" so they've been really helpful,( I said to Pete) they've told me how to make a grate. First you cut all the strips up.........." should have seen his face LOL.

All of you people with more than a foot between any two given objects are making me jealous. I can't take a pic of my shop because it's impossible to get far enough from anything to see many things.
How's this? Bay 1: boat, plywood stack, and lumber stack 1.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid225/p089ef397dec1cac466551e123c58ebf3/e92aec21.jpg
Bay 2: take all the tools that used to be in Bay 1, plus all the tools that are supposed to be in Bay 2, and jam them together with lumber stack 2 and 3 in the same space that used to be occupied with just the tools in Bay 2.

I could really use a shed. I do my work outdoors - I posted a shot of my backyard workshop up in Building & Repair yesterday - and everything bar major fabrication work for the Grantala rebuild has been done on deck, on the water.
Here's Bazza's shed, where the cabin sides were made, beams laminated, etc. This is my son spraying his Industrial Tech project last year. We turned a whole heap of teak into shavings here yesterday - taking it down from 20mm to 16mm.

Man that belt sander and the table saw which I also noticed are friggin awesome!!... I am severely green eyed :o
Cheers everyone... always makes me feel good when I see some of the tiny spaces other people have to work in... now whenever I belt my hip going between the thicknesser and table saw I will say "there are many worse mate" and come back in to have a look... and then I can go out there and say "Not to bad at all ol boy! stacks of room!" ;)

I'll second that Shane - we want photos Mr Sibley.
I'm encountering major environmental problems in my shed at the moment - ie its raining - bucketloads. Everything has come to a halt - so it was off to the basement this morning to cut more teak plugs, but I've run out of dry scraps - the rest is out in the rain. Arrghhh.

So what with work and building extra accomodation for the influx............the boat hasn't been looked at for a while ! It will be though ...I need the promise of sailing her across an ocean or 2 to keep my head up ,

Thanks for the shed pics mates!! Man some of yous fellas have the bloody ducksknuts of sheds and some mean tools!!
I have to say though the costco carport thingy under the trees? We actually gave that a whirl here but when it ended up 100mtrs away in the creek after the first big wind we gave it a miss  we do get some nice blows around here and anything thats not tied bolted and blocked down seems to head for the creek in a rush... Ive still got one of the covers (the roof and sides) and was thinking of using some 3x3s to make a more solid frame for it... but well other things intrude on the plans of mice an men an all that
Paul that reminds me I really must make an outfeed table for my table saw... been promising myself one for a time now but other things have intruded so not there yet... I was thinking of installing rollers every foot or so at the same height as the table to assist the movement of the timber through do you reckon thats worth the effort or just use some laminate covered stuff?
Barrett I see your still as tightly squished as ever! :D Amazes me how you ever get a boat made in the space you have

I'd go with the P.lam setup.
With rollers I'd think a plank with tension in it might / could find a way to slide between/ cross under / and over a roller and cause a "Dingo":eek: (/ kick back / bind up etc ,) in the makin ta happen:o :D . Solid top would be mo betta .

Dingo, it's all made from lumber store 1x 4 (ridge and "chines") 1x3 (verticals) and 1x2 (diagonal strapping, collar ties), 1x10 (gussets) with 2x10 around the perimeter. All 8 ft lengths or shorter. Screwed it all together with deck screws and put it up with just me wee wife to help - all in one Fall weekend. There was no way to anchor it onto the ground, so it's actually tied off to the boat for stability. Been standing now for two and a half years. - Norm

Why I oughta :(
Paul Paul settle ol mate settle... I was just takin it all in ;)
Jigs are great... havent made too many as yet just the zero clearance insert the day I set up the table saw the sled and a router circle cutter thingy... push sticks are not jigs they are NECESSITIES!!... I have made one double angle sled for doing mitre cuts but found it wasnt accurate enough so Ive gotta figure that one out again... made a tape jig once but it didnt work either seems I either had it set on the table wrong or something as the timber binded on the blade as it went into it so before it could hangup on itself and belt me in the kisser I took the thing off and tossed it... will look into it again soon.
As Ive got an Incra fence on the table saw one of those mortice tenon jigs would be next to useless for me... I still have the Beisemeyer type fence that came with the saw but prefer the Incra now  So Im gonna have to figure another way around that issue
Actually awhile back someone sent me a jig for a circular saw for cutting strips... which I made the other day but Ive had to put to one side since I cant remember how he said he managed to keep the plank still while cutting it... a piece of ply fixed to the base of the cc and another set at the distance required for the strip ie: 1/4in 1/2in etc... works well... just cant work out how to keep the sodding length of timber still without clamps! and the damned clamps keep getting in the flamin way of the jig... I was cutting them on the table saw and probably will make a simple jig for that like I had a few years back (just a block screwed to a slider that went into the left hand side runway the smaller block on top has a screw and you just slide the whole thing to the blade (ahem turned off of course!) and match it to it then screw it back till you have your thickness then slide it back 3in or so toward the operators end of the t/s and screw tight... move your plank to the fence move fence with plank to the screw and cut continue until all done... worked okay I just want something a bit better.
Oh and I have also done away with the cowling and pawls on my t/s Paul... so Im not about to say anything about safety!... mind you Im presently trying to work a way of cutting the riving knife off the unit and reinstalling it behind the blade... just to stop the binding Ive always found the pawls to be a) too flimsy to be any good b) move out too far to hold 1/4in strips and tend to bind them to the riving knife... so Ive taken the thing off.
Okay... looking at the pics of that taper jig thingy... I can now see where I went wrong :o If Im seeing this right where I went wrong was I was keeping it stationary at the infeed side of the table and trying to send the leg through without the jig supporting it on its journey? duhhh... okay back to the drawing board for me! so why dont people give you instructions when they show jigs eh? EH?? people like me are left to guess!! not a good thing that one... it may seem simple and bloody obvious but for some of us were visual types and need to see how the things work
Anyway!! That looks a fine way of boring the dowel holes Jim! I always seem to JUST miss the exact spot and so theyre always JUST a tad too tight  aahh another shopping trip!! WHAHOO!!

Dingo of all the jigs the tapering one is the scaryist , by far . Lots to keep track of as you feed the stock thru. Adding once couple of sides are tapered it becomes more , ah , challenging to track , hold , etc.
I've found no other way to get accurate tapers , so slow and easy , sharp minded , middle of the day work , if ya get my drift.
Not last minute !, I'll just do one more thing after 8 hours of "other stuff" ! gotta get er done today !! Type work .
Can ya say DINGO in the makin ?? I think ya can :D
And about fence's that's why I like the biesmeyer fence , very user friendly for jigging off of , and accurate simple set up etc .
One shop I worked at had a Uni fence , POS , IMO , I liked the old "jet lock " fence better. But to each thier own eh:)

There is a show on TV now called "Canada Worst Handyman". The premise of the show is that each of the people nominated by a "friend" as the worst handyman had to build one eco-shed.
The show covers some of the tasks that they butchered during the building process. None of these people should be allowed to touch a tool of any kind (not even a hammer). They were so bad it was painful to watch the show.

You know the one thing this thread is bringing home to me each time I open it up? That I have it soooooo good I will never groan about the lack of space again!! I mean sharing with the missus car is one thing sharing with the bikes I can accept but sharing with the washing??? Good greif!! :D
No offence meant Robbie... its just that my missus wouldnt be game to stick the washing anywhere near my woodworking area let alone hang it over it... She KNOWS me!! I see that sorta encroachment and Id have to slip and splash those new rags for my use with terps or kero or SOMETHING!!! I wouldnt be able to resist ;)
I admire yous blokes building boats in such sheds... your friggin legends! Me I HAVE to have it just right... nothing else will do... and so far Im nearly there but not quite so I still stutter around doing smaller boat things rather than the large stuff... cause I just dont have the room!!.. okay thats not quite right is it? okay lets try this then... cause none of my machines are on wheels! YEAH!! that'll do ;)

Here's the boat shed a few years ago, before I launced the boat. Nowadays seeing duty as firewood and garden implement storage and as a general staging area for various household projects.

Hey Jim no doubt youve told me sometime awhile back but what breed is she?
Surely your not saying that is your shed Bill???? STREWTH!!! truely what some of yous fellas will use as a shed is absolutely flamin amazin!! SERIOUSLY!!
Paul... I couldnt for the life of me get the beisemeyer fence to line up straight or stay that way the outfeed end would always tend to drift toward the blade no matter what I did... so safety bein the better part of valor and having a choice with the Incra to hand I took the incra... but I still retain the other one... Im still having a few slight issues with the incra in regard to attaching jigs but for acuracy? you just cant beat the thing dead smack on EVERY TIME!! (an purty ;) ) I havent worked out all the measurein stuff yet and so far only work of the main central one but I know theyre there for a reason and one day I will figure it out!!... Id have a go at tryin to figure it but gotta do some work on the big bitche tomorrow so thats gonna have to wait for another day
Cheers and keep them coming!! Excellent stuff mates!

Actually the tent-shed workshop has it's merits. Especially in hot summer months. It's open and you can move long boards and material around. Just turn on the power blower and blow away. I'm a fan of the open air.http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid225/p242bd916376e38d70b22f184390c17b5/ea17b469.jpg

Shane ; that was a setup I made on a rare free spot in the city of Atlanta .It was good from Spring to early December one year . I could stash my table top saw in that plywood bench thing ,and used my Bosh jigsaw for curves .The building of the hull happened in a real building equiped with the tablesaw and a bandsaw .The cabin I worked out under the tarp. The final painting happened inside Margos' mega shed , which was a huge upgrade ! She may have us all whupped as far as size of shed goes .

Oh Well ,there's often a bit of thread drift by page 3 .I'll just say a 115 hp 4stroke pushes her at 31 knots with just me on board ,in smooth water . More typically I'm going a bit slower with passengers and gear aboard . It's the 24 footer .The cabin design is mine , though of course I looked at his cabin on the 30 footer as well as allot of other boats .Send me a PM if you want to yak about the design ,which I like of course .

I've got to dig up my old shop pictures. Katherine's gonna love them. It was the end of the line of the Owens Yacht Company plant. 10,500sq ft clear span, 4,000 sq ft covered in water, 20 ton overhead trolley cranes to haul and launch. Damn I miss it.

No offence taken Dingo...I actually started this project outside and behind the shed under a proper temporary cover but 3 storms in 4 months that destroyed/wrecked it before I even began the on the boat proper convinced me that it was better to move inside. There are space issues at times but nothing that can't be worked around

Boy O Boy, Thats some pretty good work shops above .
Years ago there was on American TV a show where the craftsman made great looking stuff with the most ordinary tools not one powered.:D It was in direct contrast to all the elaborate giant shop that "Norm " had with every possible power tool made On This Old House show.
I was wondering if any one here produced a boat with out any power at all, just using hand tools ?;)

I think you mean the "Woodrights Shop" with Roy Underhill. A friend said that one week on TV, he saw both Roy and Norm produce Adirondack chairs, one with hand tools, one with power. Sort of ironic.
I saw Roy Underhill in a Burger King once in Durham, NC. Seemed a little out of place after watching him on TV in an 18th century woodshop setting.

I had followed this thread, but thought my shed too unspectacular to show... until the local fellows made a modification to it. Now I can't help but smile every time I see it. It is just a simple bow-roof style shed. It is set up about an hour from where I live. Some may think that's too far away, but there are a number of metal and wood shops on the compound and I only pay $50 a month. The locals apparently couldn't help but consider it some sort of Gothic place of worship. I came to the shed one Saturday to find this...

Sorry for the links. I can't seem to post using the same procedure I've used previously.
This shed held up well to winter new england storms and several inches of storms. I cost about a $1000 to prep the site and build the shed. I used 8 mil uv resistant shrink wrap. It is streched tight over the frame--no shrinking. It would get drum tight in the cold and sag a bit in the heat.
It's 14 by 30 feet. 12 feet high. all the framing are 1 by 2 strapping. the ends are 2 by 4s
The plans are avaliable from stimson marine.

Hey Larry, you win top marks for self awareness.;):D
I'm too embarrassed to show pix of my shed.
My shed is fairly new, looks old...and I've filled it already. I'm slowly, very slowly roofing over the boat parked alongside, so that will double the space.
